Remove the rod, take the lever off and rotate it back as many teeth on the splined shaft as it will allow. It might give you some more adjustment if it hasn't already been done. Otherwise new shoes may be in order.

Thats the first thing I thought of as well and did that...but on this arm there seems to be only one position for the splines. The top of the arm has no splines (from 11 -1 o`clock) and same is true for the shaft its going onto. So I dont think I can  change the position of the arm. Thanks anyway.

A local friend has some new shoes (that I gave him) and also a spare rear brake hub (as a test) so Ill try this and see if helps. I wanted a second opinion in case Id overlooked something. Thank you!

To get mine to work, I had to use some needle nose pliers, and turn the splined shaft until it started to grab, and then start putting the linkage back on....once it's started, just remove the pliers and tap it the rest of the way on.

Thanks Joe for the tip. The needle nose pliers are def useful for this

Ill try the new shoes first though as a friend has them locally. I just wanted to see if Id somehow messed up on the linkage at the back even though I know its kind of hard to mess up. But after spending 2 good solid days in the garage I was a little fazed and so needed a second opinion. Much appreciated!

When I remove the old shoes Ill get a photo and post it here for comparison with the new ones...

Ok so tonight had a chance to change the brake shoes...went smoothly enough..here are the new ones versus the old ones...







Reinstalled wheel and rear brake now works! Success...though adjustment nut is pretty far up there...

Didnt have time for test drive tonight as the K4 was needing attention...see other thread for that fun ;).

a question..You used Vesrah  valves, ? where did you get the keepers for them ??   I only ask, because we just got the vesrah valves from Dynoman, but they are different from my original ones.

You will need to get early style retainers and keepers. You obviously have a late model K engine. I have retainers and keepers for that valve

The 810cc K2 was running great this afternoon for the 20 mile test ride #2. Beautiful weather and after balancing the carbs (thanks MikeR for the help) it ran amazing!

Fuel resistant for sure. UV who knows? Check out the PC GListen website for all the relevant info. Very nice product and one of the members here has it on his polished chopper tank and its held up for years. For me I got orange peel and had to start again  :-\

Happy days are here again? So far the signs look good...

MikeR has done some trick stuff on this new K2 head of mine with a super-port job and this combined with the 810cc pistons... :o. I went over to his place today and reassembled the bike using the advantage of the frame kit to make it pretty straightforward. After troubleshooting non-firing cylinders the end result was worth the wait....this bike growls like a hungry dog!!! I mean these 4 HM300s are nasty sounding (and I mean that in a very good way). The sound of these pipes put shivers up my spine and made me smile involuntary...what a sound...

Sadly we ran out of time for a test ride so that will need to wait when I pick it up and take it home...all I can say is I left eager to come back...this thing sounds evil  with its snappy throttle and that low deep growl that barks with every throttle blip...dangerous indeed ;)

And here it is...picked it up from MikeRs this morning (thank you Mike!)....

Ride back was enough to know it wasnt leaking ;)....there is still a hanging idle to sort out (most likely carb-airbox boots - even though new a few years ago they are not lasting and harden up over time) - so new boots are on the way then synch the carbs and then...dyno it.

Also discovered the battery is not charging...so had to bump it while wearing full leathers...fun, fun..regulator? rectifier? battery was off the K4 so thats not the issue.

Very happy though  ;D ;D ;D MikeR has been a trooper through all of  this as he knows only too well my affinity for oil and leaks   ;)

The rebuilt engine with 810cc pistons



Yours truly - the 810 feels so small compared to my K4..but is wonderful in the twisties!

It certainly was a project. the first head I used had an invisible crack in the #4 area. It would spew oil after warming up. Bottom line was one head with porting, guides, VJ and surfacing etc that ended up in the junk pile. Plus there was pulling the engine to try and fix it, putting back together (cam timing etc) and it still leaked. Take another head...port, VJ, paint etc etc and reassemble. That frame kit worked extremely well allowing total access for a top end rebuild. I'll admit I was frustrated but it all came together in the end.
