tachometer cable question
« on: February 28, 2017, 11:42:34 AM »
So my tach stopped working awhile back and then it kicked back in briefly. Now tis out again. The fact that it went in and out leads me to suspect that it could just be the cable, though maybe not.

Anyway, see the first picture. I unscrewed the cable that goes into the bottom of the tachometer. I found that the wire just hangs there. In other words, there's nothing to hold it on the tachometer side. I haven't been able to find any literature on it but it seems suspect. Shouldn't that wire somehow be held in place on tach side? Is this my issue?

In picture 2, however, I also notice that the cable has a lot of play on the engine side. Also, is that normal?

and yes, I need to clean my bike.

It is correct, in your top picture.
The cable itself has a flat side which fits into the gear in the tach.
The lower picture, the sheath, and maybe the internal cable there, is compromised.
Yes, there is play as it is only held in place by a set screw.
New OEM Honda cables are about $20.  I just replaced mine.

There's supposed to be a threaded barrel securing the cable into the tach. See those threads on the tach?

Yes there is a barrel. It's not shown. But that secures the outer housing. I'm not sure it does anything to ensure the inside stays in place.

As I stated above the shaped end of the cable itself fits into the gear.  The barrel holds it in place.  There is nothing else.

If you remove the tach cable from both fittings, the engine and the tach, you can pull that inner metal section right out of the black plastic sheath and inspect it for breakage or other damage and it can be cleaned as well. Unless you were dumping a lot of oil down the cable it looks like you need a tach seal for the valve cover and the end of the cable looks worn there also as Fly pointed out.
