Cam Chain slippers (arms) - CB400F
« on: April 10, 2005, 11:04:43 AM »
Hey folks, just in the process of getting my engine back together and the rear cam chain slipper doesn't seem to want to sit down enough to get the cap down over it. I think I may have installed it at the wrong stage, but I can't see how that would make a difference.

The valve head is already on and the cam chain is on the sprocket and fastened to the camshaft. The slipper seems to be seating in the right spot way down there in the engine, but it still comes about the top of the valve head. Is this normal? Is it suppose to be torqued down and already loaded with some tension?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks supersport, the lockbolt is all the way out and the slipper in the front went in no problem. So it's alright to start tightening the cap down?

Yup, it seems to have clicked into place and it will not go any further, so I'll assume it's a go. Thanks again!

I didn't think to observe, but I think it may be since on my parts engine, the slipper didn't poke up as high as it did on the motor i'm using. So perhaps the socket is stuck in an upward position. How would one go about unsticking it?

I don't think it moved, I'm quite sure that any give in it was the slipper bending, not the adjuster moving...

I'll try to check it out tonight, if it IS stuck, is it just a matter of some mild force?

I think I'll try to free it, I'm much too far along to be going back and splitting cases. I'll attempt some surgery on my parts motor and see what might be involved. Is the bottom of the tensioner accesible from the bottom, with the oil pan off?

I think I'll take the valve cover and slipper cap off tonight and try tightening the locknut, if it's not frozen all the way in, that might free it up...

Thanks I'll give it a shot tonight. I read someone else's fix, but it involved running the engine and she's not that far along yet!

I'll let you know how it goes!

Haha, no need to translate for me, we Canadians tend to know our British slang. So I'll try not to bugger it up and I'll run it by my other 400/4 friends.
