I am no expert on suzukis, but i believe the katana was detuned and had a steel frame verses aluminum for gsxr. Also the suspension and brakes where lower end on the kat.

you hit on the basics 750. Eventually i may be doing a Katana build after i get a lot of other things caught up so i can share what i know of them thus far. The Katana has milder cams then the GSXR, Dual exhaust instead of 4 into 1, longer wheelbase, steel chassis, Basicly the only thing in common between the Katanas and the early GSXRs is the fact they both share the same oil cooled engine and thats really about it...The Katana kept with the oil cooled engine and the GSXR went liquid cooled..However on the other hand the Katana has a lot more in common with the Bandit since they both used the same powertrain and a few more parts interchange between the two.

katriders.com would be a good source of info for your katana research.

It does mean you can use the last of the GSX-R 1127cc SACS motors in a Katana though or swap in a Bandit 1200 with cams (from Gixxer 750), decent exhaust, 1200 carbs and you get a reliable 141bhp at the wheel. The Katana makes a better all round bike in my opinion as riding position isn't as radical as Gixxer or as upright as Bandit.
Drop it into a GSX750F and its a great sport tourer.
Put it into a GSX600F and its too much fun (shorter and lower than 750 Katana) real heavy on tyres though
