hi
how often do you oil it?
i would have thought unless its a cheap after market one longer than that think about a product call  a scott oiler avalabe in the uk for about £60 $130 it automaticaly oils the chain and extends the life of chain and sprockets up to 7 times maybe 25 thousand miles plus dont know if its avalable in your part of the world google search for it
it will give you all the info on it another thought when the rear sprocket was changed was the chain if not you get massive where as they bed together and if the chains at the end of its life it will soon bugger your sprocket up

That's a loaded question. Steel or aluminum. Cheap part or good part?(That goes for both sprockets) What type of chain? What type of lube. I've had chain/sprockets go 15,000 miles(RK LFO chain, OEM front, Sunstar rear steel) on my FJ1200 with over 150HP and 10,000 miles(OEM chain/sprockets) on my Busa. The busa chain and sprockets were still in very good condition  too but the chain has a reputation for breaking when the engine gets over 170HP.

If your chain is too tight it will wear the #$%* out of your sprockets

Are you using chain wax or chain lube?
O ring chains survive with wax only.  But, not standard.
Was the chain allowed to run dry?
Did you get sand or dirt on it?

Was the new sprocket used with a worn chain or front sprocket?

The pin/roller spacing increases on worn chains and the sprocket wears to match the worn spacing.
I change sprockets every second chain.  First chain (DID) usually goes 15K-20K miles (depending on lube frequency).  The second chain lasts 10-15K because of the worn sprockets.  I use steel sprockets.
