For proof that he can, shall I post the before and after pictures from the Head that I brought to Mike? ;D ;D ;D  :D

My Dad and I pulled a 1932 Studebaker out of the woods. It has some things on it that are refurbishable, some things that are not. One can, or at least should be able to tell the difference.   ;)

Hey I've seen a pic of 754, and I know that HE has the stomach for it, ha ha! (just kidding mate............)  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

It's not a matter of "liking it or not" IMO. As a seller it's a matter of appearing mentally retarded for lack of a better term. Jesus and all his disciples could not save that crank, tensioner or rod/piston set. You're right about less and less....that's what happens with old stuff....it eventually runs out (unless you're into Harley's as it hasn't changed for 60 years). When you leave an engine open and exposed to the outdoor elements for 20 years it gravitates back to it's natural state. You will also hear less and less about "barn fresh" sandcast finds....80% are destroyed and that's the natural course of things. The bargains are long gone guys and some people try to sell crap to keep you hanging on. Maybe one of us will find Jan and Deans "Little Old Lady from Pasadena(s)" car. ::)

So what do you think the guys bidding know, that you dont??

Everything you guys are saying would make sense if no one was bidding..

The sandcast CB will become what some of the other desireables are.. like Vincent Twins, 36 EL's, Indian & other US Fours..Brough Superior, etc.... largely unaffordable to many, and parts prices higher than most would want to pay..

I don't know what the guys bidding on the cases are thinking. Maybe they think they get them and sell them for a gazillion dollars 10..15 years from now. What I saw is they are damaged which automatically reduces their value. The trans shafts are rusted in the bores and I'm sure some errosion has occured. The oxidation will really screw up surfaces too. In the end after all the repairs and cosmetic damage can you call it original?? That's the big thing right? Concours original. I totally agree that the sandcast is up there and is one of the most collectable Jap 4's ever made....more so than the 73 Z-1 etc. As for people bidding......I bet you could put a pound of Princess Di's crap on ebay and fetch a great price. Some people aren't very bright and some are just dumb. ;)

Who says they have to be concours?

If you were planning to build a racer, would you use pristine cases or start off with rough ones?

It may all seem like insanity to you guys but to those of us sitting on original undamaged sandcast engines, this is Christmas! I say bid it up. It just makes mine worth that much more.
Yes, some things go insanely high on feebay, like the corn flake shaped like Illinois for $200K. The way I see it, if both buyer and seller are happy with the sale then nobody got screwed. Personally I wouldn't buy any of that guy's sandcast junk so I'm not bidding on it. I'm just watching it and laughing. ;)

me too , because even if they are soon all gone, there is always a machine shop that will always duplicate if you want to sack up and pay the fee, been there before and about to do it again for an old garden roto tiller that is just too much of a monster to give up on...So i pay the fee and thank the man for the freshly made duplicate. ;D ;D ;D ;D

I don't see them being wrth what the bids have hit, obviously some people think they are though.

The reasons I don't see the value is simply because of the cracks and corrosion, and who knows what damage the rust has done in the transmission area. (red oxide = HUGE expansion) by the time you have them repaired you will have another $1000 to $2000 into the cases alone.
Also, judging by the rust and oxidation, it's a very good indication that the thing was sitting outside with water in it, does it freeze where it was? (salem oregon? I'd say YES) If so it's a fair assumption that the cases themselves have been distorted by ice.

And after putting all the money into the cases, collecting parts to build an engine with them, and collecting all the frame peices,  you still will NOT have an 'original' sandcast bike, it will be an assembled bike with expensive parts. (something that for some reason doesn't seem as important to the sandcast crowd, try selling any other  'assembled' vehicle as an 'original' and you'll often end up in court)

The bidders are professional "Sandcast hunters" and I'm betting they've got a sandcast frame and no engine.

Obviously they're hoping to do a "switcheroo" using all diecast K0 or K1 components into those cases once they get them repaired. I doubt if they're worried about how long the engine will stay together, they won't have it long enough to worry about it.

I should write the engine number down and wait until the complete bike re-appears on EBay, and warn the potential buyers, ha ha. I'm also betting that at least one of our members here is bidding, or at least, has a snipe programmed in..............  ;D
