I don't know what year.  I'm not up on old BMWs.  I'm guessing it's someone's new acquisition and it's in for a resto to right some of the wrongs that have been done to it.  I just thought the tank(and the whole bike) was cool enough to snap some pics.  It's in at my friend's shop.

I remember that there were a few aftermarket manufacturers for /2 tanks. In the '60's and 70's when I was paying more attention,  Heinrich, and others were making alloy tanks in the 10 gallon vicinity for these critters. That's somewhere's over 500 miles without fill up. These were the premier touring bikes of the day, and I guess in some places that's how far it was between gas stations.

The engine is a /5. Dunno what the frame is, but it looks like someone decided earls forks would be cool on a newer frame, and did a sketchy job of it.
As dar as I can tell, that's not a BMW manufactured tank... There were a coupel aftermarket companies that made tanks very much like that for the /5 and /6's.
Headlight is to something else, dunno what.

Yeah, the Bing CV's & shape of the rocker cvrs say /5; the front wheel assy looks even newer than that (early r100s?). 'Bitsa' Beemers are not my speciality.
The headlight looks like something of a smaller displacement English bike.......BSA Bantam?
It certianly does stretch the confines of "personalization" tho...

God, I hope whoever owns it isn't hoping for a full concourse restoration. I wouldn't even know where to begin!

The bucket and guage (and the key) looks like it MAY be from a /5, but the ears, ring and other stuff make it really difficult to tell. At first glance I though it was squared off. Hard to tell, though. Something just doesnt feel right about it, though. It looks.. too long?
