I picked up a 1979 cb650.

Only work that's been done to it is things to keep it running.  Overall in pretty good shape......only have to figure out what's not working on the charging system :D  I'll get some pics up soon!

Welcome fuzzy

got any pics of your machine?  We like pics here  ;D

Welcome to the forum!  When you've had enough and are ready to throw it in the trash, let me know.  I need some parts for my 79.

Here's a bunch of pictures!  She's in the raw.  I paid 0 for the bike.  I'm into it for the cost of new tires.

Finally getting registered in Yakima WA. First build, so we'll see how she turns out. Still got plenty of work to do.

Welcome Tatjunkie and Fuzzy4, anything we fellow 650 owners can help you with just post your problem (put 650 in the subject line so we know to jump in) :D
That is one great deal you got Fuzzy4, free bike just add tires! :D
Tatjunkie, where is Yakima WA I'm guessing Western Australia but that could be Western Alaska on this international forum. :)

Yakima is in Eastern Washington (WA = Washington) here in the USA.

I'm on the west side of the state, just a bit south of Seattle.

Greetings! Nice to see a bunch of 650 owners coming out of the woodwork! :D

There are a lot of charging threads about the cb650... the skinny on it is that when Honda decided to put out the 650, they went with electromagnetic alternator/generators.  The same as in the CB900 and CB750 DOHC models.  This is all well and good, but unfortunately, the rotors themselves are kind of poor quality.  They tend to short internally and for whatever reason both Hush and I can vouch for rotors that test within normal ohms between the slip rings and still not charge correctly.

The best solution so far is either a new one ($$) or have your original rewound.
Pics are on my thread (in my sig) of the rewind.

Otherwise, connections, connections, connections, clean and dielectric grease them all. :)

Heya, that's going to be my biggest issue.  Already got caught twice with a dead battery.  One time i was lucky I was close to home and was able to plug into a house to charge it.  Other than that the speedo cable cracked 2 blocks after I started to ride it.  Rest of it is solid.

Kit, you got a rotor re-wound by Tim Parrott right?  How was your experience with him?  I paid him last Friday and I've not heard from him since.  I had great communication up until I paid him.  Starting to worry.

I probably harassed the heck out of him. I paid, then sent my rotor and stator in, emailed him after he'd had my rotor and stator for a few days, he said it'd take a bit longer.  The thing is, when he ships, he ships flat rate, so you don't get tracking information and it takes a little longer.  but I did get it when he said I would. Talking to him, it sounded like he had an awful lot of work (hopefully not too much) but that would contribute to his delays.

He did do a really nice job, though.

Here's my 30-year-old CB650. Same model and colour as my first bike in 1979.

Well, it's been over a week (sent payment last Friday) and I've not heard one word from him (this is with me sending three emails asking about times).  If he doesn't get back to me by tomorrow I'm contacting PayPal and my credit card company about getting my money back.

third cylinder won't fire...       ...any suggestions? Carbs are clean, valves are fine, all four fire with a spray of starter fluid. That third cylinder is taunting me. help.

I'd check for flow from all carbs esp #3 by putting a tube on the carb drain and see what comes out, you may have a jammed float (jammed down therefore no gas getting to that cylinder) me thinks. ;)

if it starts with starter fluid, it has to be the carbs.

yeah, I'm thinkin' fuel delivery. maybe float height, maybe gunky passages (not just the jets, but the little peripheral passages as well)
