Try changing the oil and filter plus remove the sump and de-varnish the scavenger pump gauze filter, I did all that and my 650 stopped leaking and hasn't had an oil leak for the last year.
The air filter change was a good call, if in doubt always chuck em out. ;D
Still she looks nice outwardly, no wonder Kit is green. :D
If you don't mind me asking T-bone, what did you pay for the bike? :)

The man I bought the bike off of said he had just changed the oil, but I still plan on changing it myself.  The way I see it, wipe the slate as clean as possible so I'm not inheriting the problems of anyone else.

I put in a K&N air filter, but eventually I want to get rid of the stock air box and go to the four individual air filters attached to the carbs.

As far as what I paid, I feel like I'm insulting the bike.  $500.  He said he only wanted back about what he paid for it when he got it off the showroom floor back in '80.

1979 Front brake Caliper.. Options?

Ok.. Im pretty sure my front caliper is dragging the rotor. I used that shim from the tool kit
and tried to get it between the caliper and rotor to no avail. when brake is disengaged, it's not
disengaging.

The wheel spins but there is a constant shushing noise.

Got any solutions?
Are other calipers swappable for the 79 cb650?

If the piston isn't retracting when you release the brake there are a few things you can do.  first check to see if the second hole in the reservoir is plugged up.  some use guitar string, i used a copper wire from a coax cable.  if that doesn't fix it then take the caliper off.  remove the seals and clean behind.  check for pitting on the piston.  you can try to reuse the seals if they're in good shape, but I would suggest getting new seals regardless of their condition.

No band-aid fixes for brakes please  ;)

get a 14mm socket, 10mm socket, philips screwdriver and needlenose pliers
take the caliper off and the brake pads out. pump the brake lever until the piston pops out
remove the dust seal and the inner seal
clean everything and inspect the piston for pits.
If all is well reassemble and flush that nasty old brake fluid out.

new brake pads would do you good if yours isn't up to snuff.

I found what looked like grease inside my caliper and no amount of poking around would fix it. Master cylinder kits are still available and I would recommend one. Nice thing about these bikes are you have 1 caliper, 1 master cylinder and 1 brake line. Servicing the brakes are relatively cheap and easy as compaired to a modern setup with 2 calipers a mess of lines and rear hydraulic brakes.

You can go about it two ways, you can take your caliper apart and see what is wrong with it and then order just those parts from your local honda dealer or bike bandits (I've used BB and never had an issue, although some report probs), but that could keep your from riding. Or, you can just order the most commonly buggered parts and hope you get it right, which is kinda what a rebuild kit is. Here is the exploded view from BB.

http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/honda-motorcycle-cb650-1979/o/m9572

I think the seal and boot would be the usual culprits followed by a pitted piston. Thats just my guess though. Have you taken it apart to see what you can find?

unfortunately neither bikebandit.com nor anyone else has any parts to rebuild the caliper.
They all have master cylinder parts, fluid. but no seals or pistons to sell in case, god forbid,
someone might need to rebuild the caliper.  :(

When I bought the bike, the guy i bought it from rebuilt the master cylinder, flushed the fluid,
and took apart and cleaned the caliper. The pads are ok but should probably get replaced soon.
It was dirty but cleaned up fine. The piston had very minor pitting but felt and looked smooth enough.

The link I provided was to the parts fiche, you have to pic the items individually they don't come in a kit.

ahhh .. ok.
So, which parts do I need to get to rebuild.. I am sure I need the piston seal.
What else. I need pads, the boot. These parts are available. The piston itself is not
available.. I remember seeing minor pitting in it.. should I worry?

EBC pads are probably better.  Pistons are damn hard to find, and if I knew where to get an unpitted one, I'd be on it like white on rice. Mine has some pitting but I'm living with it for now. Plan on replacing all your rubber bits, because it swells and gets weird over time and exposure to brake fluid.

thanks Kit.. I was suspicious.. thank you for confirming.

is there another caliper that will fit the 79? The 80-82 front forks do,
so i wonder if an 80-82 caliber would work to.

uh oh..

I have a 1979 Cb650.. i just bought wheels from manjisann off a 1980 cb650. sizes are all correct, they look good,
but, on the rear brake assembly the brake arm points up, where on the 1979, the brake arm is down..
is going to be a problem, on can I just loosen the arm and point it where it needs to be?

thanks.

I've wondered why the 80 on had it up.   Can you use your 79 brake ass?    Sometime in mid year 81 they started using twin piston clipers in front.  Looks like they will bolt right in but you need the disk also.

That's the same model I had, but you better go back to work now and let the poor owner out of the cupboard you locked him in! :D
I had a lot of trouble with rust flakes from the tank, had to clean it out 3 times before it stopped filling the filter with orange crud, I think the strange shape of the tank has something to do with the amount of rust it accumulates, you might want to keep it garaged.

Hey all, just saying hi ... I just picked up a 1980 CB650C for $250 in pretty decent shape. Needs a new headlight and a little TLC (carbs gummed up, front brake seized) but is really pretty clean overall - very little rust, and no signs of oil leaks etc. I'm hopeful of getting this bike on the road pretty soon, but I may need some advice from the experts along the way!

replace it with either a motorcycle-specific H4 bucket, or an OEM '81 or '82 CB650 bucket, because those are H4 compatible, too.  ...unless you want to go HID.  Either way, fantastic score and very, very nice looking bike. :D

Put in a new rotor and replaced my float bowl gaskets and my bike is on the road.  Need to adjust the valves (tool has been ordered into the Honda dealership) as I have some slight top end ticking and a do a carb sync to make it 100% but it runs really well as is right now.

Bought a "stock" seat off eBay so I got rid of the king and queen.  Grab bar is in the mail and I'll be good to go.

I've gotta say, I totally have the hots for the black-and-gold tank.  I dunno what it is about it, but it 's so much nicer than that candy wine red.

Hey, when did you become an "Old Timer" Miss?
Anyhow, great scores for all these guys, so nice to see the 650's getting used again.
Any help you guys need just ask, we don't bite but we have been through most problems you will face so it's still pretty clear in our minds how to fix them. :)

All these guys getting bikes for next to nothing  :(
or actually nothing is bumming me out because I
paid 1,400 for mine. I mean I am happy for u guys,
it's just I never seem to stumble on those kinda deals.

Anyway, this forum has been great and I'm able to get
a lot of work done to my 650 thanks to a great bunch
of fellow enthusiasts. Next up.... The MAC 4-1 exhaust.

Will I need to re-jet for that exhaust? If I wanted to add
pods in the near future, would I need to make chnges
or is it a better idea to add the exhaust and pods at the
same time and just re-jet at the same time?

What are the jet recommendations for :
(zero altitude)

exhaust only : _________
exhaust and pods :________
