no info for you on the pistons and rings, but I must say I love your bike.  Ours are twins. :D

The rear shocks had a tendency to be soft and saggy.  Dunno how the height works for you, but Progressive makes some replacements for not-too-much $$, and while you're at it you might want to put prog. springs up front, too.  They made all the difference in my handling.  I thought they were a little saggy, but the new springs made me feel like the front of the bike was just glued down.  Beautiful handling.

I also find false neutral around 4th-5th. Could be worn clutch dogs, warped plates...

Do you have a link for the shocks?  I'm 6'2" so I have a bit of leeway on the ride height.  I know the rear are adjustable, I'll have to see where mine are adjusted at and maybe change them up.

I just put on some 80 750 F shocks on my 80 650 and like em so far.  About a inch longer and stiffer.

Bill you should have told me about the gagues.  I have a few sets.  Send me a pm of what you need and I'll look around.

Will do Terry, my list is growing though, so it seems. ::) About those gauges, the chrome piece on the bottom of the tach (of the set I got off of ebay) was slightly dented and the mount bracket of the assembly, was bent some also (price wasn't too bad though) and I just happened to have a decent mount piece AND the chrome piece for the tach. The face and the glass on the tach look like new, but the speedo face is slightly faded, but not much though. I took those "Mini" Gauges off. Not sure what I'll do with those just yet, put them up for now. Gotta get the original gas tank sealed so that there will be no leaks and then make it ready to install, so that the seat will fit properly.  ;)

These are the 13" ones, but I'm sure you can find a better deal.  Just look up the part number- "12-1204B"

I'm running generic cheapo 11" shocks because I'm inseam challenged at 5'5".
Mindblowing how $$$$$ those are! Geez! I got my fork springs for $72! Crazy.

You know the tail light that I wanted to put on this 650? ???

Well, I got it today and it is going to look GREAT! 8) ;) Thinking about bobbing the rear fender slightly, to make things look neater. :)

sounds like a broken wire... good thing its the left its easier then the right to take off.

Take the switch back off and look for pinched or broken wires.  It will be like 3 wires going up to your beam select switch.  The one in the middle is power if I remember correctly.

i already have taken it apart and i think the reason it wont work is because i have taken it apart only time it will work is when it isnt even attached to the handlebars

so it works when not attached? I think one of the wires is hitting the handlebar when you put it on or something. Or hitting another wire. I would look closely to see if all 3 clear the handlebar without grounding to it.

The older bikes take an earth from the bars, did you paint or coat the switch block with anything?
Try running an earth to it with just a piece of spare wire from something that you know is well earthed.
If it was a power wire earthing I'd expect you to blow a fuse.
I believe Manjisan (Brandon) had the same thing happen to him with new "plastic coated" bars he fitted. ;D

Heh, that was on my old 73 500. I beleive bikes older than approx 80 all grounded to the frame, no ground wires. I can tell you that the 80 650c controls have ground wires since the control cases are plastic and don't conduct electricity (theres a shocker eh ;) )

If the controls are made of plastic then they will have a common ground wire that will complete the circuit for the whole control. If it works off the bike but not on I'm in agreement with the others that say you have a short in the control somewhere. Look for loose wires, screws or compromised insulation.

Also what year and model bike do you have? There is a jumper that goes from the right side to the left, these switches are so much more complex than they needed to be.

I bought one from the dealer a month ago.  With tax it was $8.70 I think.

Do you know what part # it was?  I have the "old" part # in my manual and my old tool had it stamped on it but last year when I asked the dealer they looked confused.

I called the dealer and the guy over the phone said they didn't carry it anymore, so I then emailed them and got a response and got it ordered no problem.  It was actually $8.02 plus tax.  Not bad!

Well I finally got some photos of my own, of the 650 I picked up on. Biggest problems right now are the gas tank (need an 80' CB650C tank to properly secure the seat in the front, it has a standard 650 tank), a left handlebar switch assy amd a brake master cylinder.

The first two show it as I got it.

These show the changes in progress

This shot shows the seat, fender AND tail light that I wasn't too proud of. Also this one shows the exhaust leak at the front of where the muffler attaches (see the black, from the leak?) It now has a stock seat (fender joint is covered) and the tail light is soon to be replaced with a Lucas Style unit I bought. Gonna bob the rear fender slightly too!      More to come. ;)

Bill, that tank is from a Nighthawk bike, I think. The 80 and 81/82 650's, whether standard or custom, had pretty much the same tank but the petcock sizing for the fuel line is different on the 80. The 79 is completely different from all the other years too.

This is the 79 look... definitely boxier overall.

This is the 80-82 regular 650 and 650c... getting curvier.

This is the 650sc from 82-85... whole different bike and has the side attachment hole for the side covers.

I think the tank looks good on there but I see why you would want to change it. I'm going in the direction of a brat bike on our next project 80 650c and think that tank would look good on something like that. Do the holes line up with the current tank mount? Is there a way to get rid of the side cover hole area by cutting it off or maybe cover it up somehow? You're giving me ideas, Bill.  ;) I like the original tanks too. We are going to keep the one off the 2nd bike for Kit to change colors on hers. Then on a whim, she can just go from black to whatever she decides to paint it and have a different bike.  ;D

You know, I'll have to pull the seat and see just how that tank is mounted. It seems a little loose on the front and I don't know, right off, just how the tank is mounted at the rear. My main concern, for now, is that the seat doesn't mount securely in the front. I don't really know if you could cut off the parts of the tank where the side covers attach or not. I'd be nervous about trying to cut those parts off. I'd probably be more toward trying to fab a couple of pieces that would attach (kinda like the side covers do) to that part of the tank and cover up that part of the tank (kind of a "Trim" piece) you know?

Hey, if I can come up with a gas tank for mine, you can have this one, if you want it. ;)    Like you said, it doesn't look bad, but it just doesn't do what I need it to do (like secure the front of the seat).

                                                Take care, Bill ;)

Here's another shot if it, after I had taken off some of the PO's stuff and with what I got with the bike (another gas tank and a set of Comstars w/ a new tire on the rear one)
