Sometimes you get lucky
« on: March 22, 2008, 03:38:39 PM »
Just got back from a bike buying spree about 20 miles north of my house.I got an 81 GS650 with 20K miles, title, ride & drive but with a charging problem and a 79 GS750 with 11K miles, title, motor kicks over but has not run in 3 years and a 74 GT185 2 stroke twin, no title, kicks over but has not been run for 6 years all for the bargain basement price of $300. I only wish it happened more often.

Hey nice pick up mate, for a fix for that charging problem, go to TheGSReseources.com site, it's probably the GS achilles heel, the regulator/rectifier. That 650 sure is neat, it's a pity I'm trying to "thin the herd" so I can buy a Harley Sportster, or else I'd make you an offer! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thanks guys! I got them unloaded and drove the 650 into the shop and carried the 750 in with the skidsteer. Someone took the headlight off the 750 and cut all the wires coming out of the headlight bucket including the main harness. >:( Luckily I have a 79 or 80 GS1100 with a good headlight and all harnesses to swap onto the 750. The 1100 also has the regulator/rectifier which I'm going to check against the 650's to see if I can plug it into the 650's wiring. If the wiring connector is the same then it should work, right?

Why don't you make me an offer on my Sportster? ;D

I checked out the 650 and the stator and regulator are shot but electrex makes updated parts for $250 shipped so I ordered them. Some idiot took the headlight off the 750 and cut all the wires going into the headlight including the main harness, dash wiring, keyswitch and handlebar controls. >:( I hot wired it and with some fresh gas it started up and ran with the choke on so I think I'll just flip that one and call it good. The 185 went into the shed with all my other 2 strokes. I'll save it for a resto project for another day. Now I can polish the 650 up while I'm waiting for the parts to arrive. ;D
