possible to clean carbs without taking them apart?
« on: August 09, 2005, 10:12:51 PM »
so, i *accidentaly* poured a whole thing mystery oil in my half full tank and then ran the bike. It didnt run at all. Tonight i drained the tank and the float bowls and put new gas and ran it. It runs way better but not like it was. so my question is this: can i just put some sort of cleaner in there and then drain again or some #$%*e? I really really dont wanna take off the carbs again.

..hmm...mystry oil in the tank...thats a new one!  :D   Right off hand I would think mystry oil would burn off pretty quick...if it continues to run bad I'd pull the carbs and spray some carb cleaner all around and see if that helps.  I would not think this would warrent a full out carb cleaning...

suggestion: You may want to run a fuel additive in your next tank of petrol.  This may insure there is little to no oil residueleft to clogg your lines, jests, and resivour.  You will run rich maybe smoke a bit..no worries, it may take a tank or so...cheers

There are additives on the market for cleaning carbs simply by adding to the gas tank, but I can't recall what they are  ::)

Don't just go nuts with carb cleaner - it will eat every peice of rubber (o-rings) it comes into contact with.  You have o-rings on your main jets that will turn to mush.

I dont have o rings on my mains...

Try to stay away from ANY fuel additives if you can.

I would take the tank off and wash it out 2 or 3 times with a gallon of freash gas each time.

Buy a new fuel filter as it was not ment to filter oil of any kind and is ruined.

Spray your float bowls and the underside of the carbs with carb cleaner in can untill clean.

Since oil is much thicker than gas it will stick to the carbs and fuel lines untill it is rinsed  out. The oil will also allow dust, dirt and other crud to stick along with it creating mud...which will not rinse out easily if at all.

Fill your tank with whatever gas you normally use and keep it full. Ride your bike, topp the tank off that day. this will thin oout the residual oil more and more with every top off.

If it doesnt clear up the problem is most likely crud that got stuck because of the sticky oil and a good, complete cleaning is the next course of action.

Marvel Mystery oil is a common additive for owners of old Harleys and Indians. Kinda like purne juice for the geriatric.

Do some seafoam and ride. That is the best option if you REALLY do not want to pull the carbs. Stuff works great.
use about 1/3rd of the can per full tank.

Try some Redline SI-1 complete fuel system cleaner.  This stuff works better than any product I've ever tried.  When I first got my bike it had set for a while.  I drained the tank and it still had a little hesitation and poor idle.  One treatment (3 or 4 ounces) with the SI-1 and I thought I had a new bike.  It is NOT solvent based, so it won't harm gaskets, rubber or plastic parts.  It is very concentrated.  One bottle treats up to 100 gallons of gas.  I usually use an ounce per tank on the bike, or a couple of ounces per tank on a car.

Here's a link to a PDF file for it:

It's available at Pepboys and Advance Auto for around $5 as I recall.
