HELP! my crank case has a chunk out of it! is there a fix?
« on: February 18, 2009, 07:02:15 PM »
So i am in the process of refurbing my engine all is going as planed and then i see that i have a broken bolt in the crank case PO must have broke it off and when he did took a chunk out of the case. how do i fix this i can get the broken bolt out that i am not worried about its the case itself that i am stumped on. this motor is going into a complete resto so it has to look good as new. will JB weld work? can it be filled with weld? the case will be painted when i am done.

here is a pic

Sure, that can be TIG welded by a sufficiently skilled weldor, and JB Weld would also work.  The only forces at work there are compression from the bolt, and crankcase bolt torque is relatively low.  It looks to me like there's sufficient metal left that it won't be an issue.

There's a member in this forum that offers micro-welding services. He's posted pics of parts welded into carb bodies, I guess he can do your cases. The problem I see with tig welding engine cases is that it has to be perfectly clean of oil or it'll sweat out of the pores when you're welding messing up the beauty of a tig weld bead.

i would JB weld it ,   TIG welding that would be way more work then it's worth ,  diecast alloy has many other metals and foreign matter in it to contaminate the weld,

basically what would happen is , someone would weld it (pulling the contaminates to the surface) grind all that off , weld again, grind all that off, repeat,   with cast alloy it my take 3 or 4 rounds till it's actually a clean bond .
