OEM vs Aftermarket parts
« on: March 26, 2008, 06:47:37 PM »
I am sorry, I am new to this group and maybe topics I am starting were discussed 2 years ago.

Here is another one:

I noticed that when comparing OEM ignition switch vs Aftermarket that the wire gage seems to be smaller on the Aftermarket one.  So... last week, I purchased on Ebay 4 new indicators (flashers) , I asked the seller if they were Stanley Brand and he answered yes.  I received the 4 units today and word Stanley is not embossed on the lens and again, like the ignition switch, the wire gage seems to be smaller.

When possible, I try to use OEM parts to maintain the bike as close as possible as it was when new.

Question:  in general, do you think that OEM are better that Aftermarket???

It all depends on the parts you are replacing. I got a signal light from parts n more and it has been flawless. As have other parts I have gotten. Now the meier side covers are not as nice but much cheaper than from DSS. Just depends on the part.

Yes, I would say the Honda OEM parts are much better than replacement parts. However it really depends on you and how original you want to keep the bike.  In my experience I find that replacement parts are good for certain things. For example I don't mind putting motion pro throttle cables on my bike for ~25.00 a pair as compared to ~$70.00 a pair for OEM. If I'm replacing the clutch cable I would definately go with OEM the quality is far superior and the fit is perfect. If you are a perfectionist stick with OEM and I hope you have a fat wallet.

OEM is usually better. Ive had more than a few aftermarket ignition switches (EMGO) fail, even after a few weeks of it being new...wouldt buy aftermarket ones again......but then saying that Keyster carb kits are usually ok...but no guarantees of course...all depends on the part...cables - Motion Pro are usually ok.

cheers

OEM points are, I found, to be better quality than aftermarket.  I put in some points that were priced "right" but didn't hold up.  After closer comparison of the two, I saw that the OEM parts had bronze bushings on the pivot point and would hold position whereas the aftermarket points were wiggling around every time the points cam opened them up, and they wouldn't come together flat, points face to points face.  They were just "sloppy".  Gaskets are another thing too, where you have to do some research to find a quality head gasket and other engine gaskets.  Carb parts are in the same situation.  OEM beats out the aftermarket again.

dont use the keyster air screws .. they are bronze, and the spring chews the back out of the when adjusting, then you have to clean your carbs out again...

just my experience though
