Topic: Maxi Dwell points

G`day guys
Picked this up with some other stuff cheap recently, i`ve heard different points of view on these, from bloody great to a waste of time.
So, i know the little light is missing on the back, thought a LED might be a suitable replacement, and the "input" wires have been cut short but thats easily fixed.
Is it worth doing?
When the points need replacing what is the make and model to replace them with?

Yeah mate, you'll get the "anti points" naysayers coming out of the woodwork of course, but I've always been interested in the maxi dwell with it's own built-in timing light etc. I don't know what points they used though? Cheers, Terry.

i did the searches and found "GM" "corvette" and not too much else...
Might have to take it to motormate and see what they can find in the books, any thoughts on a LED to replace the missing strobe?

So you are the one who paid a motza for those... what about the blank points plate and the other plate were they worth it what was the final price as well ??

Oh - thought I'd mention it  _ I got a 75F left hand side cover for $25 on Easter Monday  - nobody bid on it - I have just taken three lottery tickets so I must win - my luck is IN..

Think final price with postage was about 30, needed the blank plate for the second motor i got as the plate is missing on it.
Saw the side cover but just got my set from one of the guys on here, two small cracks only 52 with postage lol..... cost me 15 for a tube of permatex liquid weld and they are as good as new, got to love this place lol.

Its not an LED, its a small NEON light bulb. Radio Shack used to sell them, don't know if they still do. You can also buy cheap electrical testers for 120V circuits that use them.

I've just heard 350 chevy as far as the points? Take them to an auto parts store and match them up.

I think they are a good product and will get more performance from your stock coils as well as longer life from the points

got a decent small auto parts store near me and the old guy behind the counter knows his stuff, and theres a decent dick smiths at the local shopping centre

Points used fit GM 8-cyl. 1957-74.

The points will require a corner to be ground off. Look at the first pic, it is where the rivet is near 12 oclock and 6 oclock, it looks to me to be clearance for the washer used under the mounting screw. When you replace you remove the rivets, so replace with screws.

I had heard that they use stiffer springs in the Vette points so I went with them.

They do seem to require way less attention than the stockers, and even with stock coils will easily rev to 11K, I have used stock and Andrews coils with them.

Use a neon bulb, not an LED. The neon bulb flashes from the coil's kickback voltage, sort of like the old neon timing lights. It reads a bit late, though, about 1 degree at 1000 RPM, so advance the timing just a bit if you use that one for the reference, or use a real timing light first, so you get used to the delay. An LED will burn out very quickly, and it will also stay ON for the whole OFF cycle of the coil, making useless timing light signals.

The neon bulb just connects straight to ground on one end, and to the selected points on the other. That's it!

Do us a favor if you have points now.. set them and time them, then put these in when you get it sorted & tell us what you think of them..

First, make sure it is the right plate, mine aint blue and I think they made them for Kawi as well..

Well the plate has honda stamped onto it and it looks right.
When i get the bike running right i will, damned thing is being a real pain, and i`ve been real crook the last few days, rugged up on the couch with the laptop not up to going out to work on the bike, only feeling a little better today. Always happens when you take a week off
