What does everyone have for riding gear?
« on: March 26, 2008, 09:41:44 AM »
Just a spin off of the riding gloves thread since it kinda got sidetracked. Personally i have a Belstaff Airstream jacket, HJC FS-10 Helmet, Alpinestars SMX-2 Air Carbon gloves...soon to have some Icon standard duty boots.

The gloves.

The helmet

I have the red airstream jacket shown on the bottom of the page.

Davida helmet, goggles, Icon pursuit gloves, Aerostitch combat boots, nothing for the legs except Levi's, not sure what to get for that. Vintage Schott leather jacket that I got of ebay for 85 bones. Best deal I ever got off ebay.

Shoe RF200 and a Kiwi K10 that isn't too comfortable.  Hein Gericke jacket purchased in 1986.  Kevlar lined jeans (Draggin') I think.  Beat up old leather lace up boots that I bought in the 80s.  Various ratty gloves.  It ain't pretty.

Anything motorcycle specific will be better. Denim wears through instantly at any speed of 'off'.

Arai Quantum II helmet for everyday—thought about an open face but I like having a jaw. Had a friend in high school who had a nasty bike accident...

For those craptacular days:
Hein Gericke Timbuktu jacket, tourmaster caliber pants, Alpinestars GP Plus gloves with liners, Sidi On Road Goretex boots

For nice to brutal days:
Vanson perf'd leather jacket another deal off ebay, jeans, Chippewa leather boots (great quality but hell to get on and off) or the Sidi's

My gear...

Red Shoei RF1000 Helmet with Starcom headset installed
...seems to fit my head best.

Red Cortech GX Air Jacket  http://www.tourmaster.com/xcart/product.php?productid=10&cat=25
...overall love it. Installing the liners is somewhat of a pain

Gray Tourmaster Caliber Textile pants  http://www.tourmaster.com/xcart/product.php?productid=173&cat=4
...just got them. One downpour test. Totally dry.

Oxtar Matrix Boots http://www.newenough.com/closeouts/bargain_basement/oxtar/matrix_2_goretex_motorcycle_boots.html
...love the fit. I have a 11 AA foot. These fit very well and the construction is excellent.

Dianese Gloves http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=3&L2=15&L3=&L4=&item=DAI_1815440-691-XS_G&tier2=95
...juries still out. Still haven't really found a glove I like.

or Alpinestars if warmer  http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=3&L2=15&L3=33&L4=&item=PAR_AS38-42-S_G&tier2=24

Frogg Toggs rain gear http://www.cyclegear.com/spgm.cfm?L1=3&L2=14&L3=&L4=&item=FRG_FT1032-01SM_G&tier2=65
.....great... light, waterproof, cheap and compact! Great for slipping over other gear.

Oh yeah, I forgot these...

Etymotic sound-isolating earbuds...  http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/368905-REG/Etymotic_Research_ER6IBLKC_ER_6IB_Sound_Isolating_Earphones.html

Most awesome earplug/earphones I've ever used.  Hook em up to the Ipod shuffle and when I'm on the highway I can listen to tunes while I ride (and it also mostly blocks out the near-deafening straight pipes on the XS cafe  ;D).  Around town I can turn off the music and it blocks enough of the pipes to be comfortable but still loud enough that I can safely hear road noise (sirens, horns honking, etc)

I can never understand why someone would listen to music on a bike...well in the city anyways....long distance rides i could understand it..but within the city..never could understand that one..

Honestly on the XS on the highway, the droning sound of the vertical twin is almost hypnotizing, and can give you a headache after a while.  The music counteracts that.  And the nice thing about the headphones is, I don't have to blare the music to hear it.  I basically keep the volume at a conversational level, more as background music than an action movie soundtrack  ;D

And of course the music is turned off in the city.  ;)

this may have changed because the last time my dad said this was a long time ago... but, w/ him being a cop at the time i believed it... driving w/ headphones is illegal... at least in kansas where he was enforcing the law.

Headphones maybe, but what about earbuds or even earplugs?

I know plenty of people who ride with earplugs, and I've been pulled over before with the earbuds in and the cop never said anything about it.

the reasoning that i remember is "anything that has the ability to drown out traffic noise and stuff you should be hearing while driving"... yea, i have loud stereos too and the argument is really thin...

just discussion...

Well I would certainly fight it if the issue came up.  How does he know I was listening to music?  A lot of circumstantial evidence there...  Course with our judges I probably wouldn't get far, but that wouldn't stop me from doing it again.

Ear plugs are a good idea.  If I ride too far without them I get the ringing sensation for a while.  Every little bit of hearing damage adds up over time.  I've never tried music.  I think there's more danger and distraction in fooling with an Ipod or whatever while riding than the actual noise.  Sing to yourself - I sound pretty good inside my helmet.

For the other gear I have a Vanson jacket.  Bought it on ebay for pennies on the dollar.  You can't really hurt this leather, so buying used is a good option if it's just seen normal use.  Have an Arai and Shoei helmet and am overdue for a new one.  That thing with the built-in sunshield looks like a good option.  Gauntlet gloves with kevlar knuckles.

Jeans and boots are my weak points - it will probably catch up to me one day.  I have some cortech pants and Alpinestar boots but don't wear them 99% of the time.  I should.  I used to wear full leathers on those early Sunday morning rides.  The ultimate protection, but talk about a cop magnet.

That built in sunshield is great on sunny days...only real problem i have found with this helmet thus far is the fact that the sunshield tends to fog up if you have the breath deflector in and the outer visor all the way down..have not tried it with the deflector out and both down yet so i cant say that it may or may not fog up..however i can see the outer visor fogging up with the deflector out...so best solution seems to be keep the outer visor open slightly.

I have a friend who has been totally deaf (deef?) since birth, that does not stop him from driving his Miata all over Houston. I know that is different. Then there are all of the new SUV's and super luxury vehicles that tout total quiet as one of their selling points.

And another thing, try hearing traffic when you are on a V-twin with straight pipes, wearing a full DOT approved bandana and no earplugs.

Here is a link to state by state motorcycle laws. Makes for interesting reading especially if you are touring the US.

http://www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/laws.asp

As an example, Mass. says "illegal to use or possess" about helmet speakers.  :o

Florida has no restriction. I see nothing about earplugs in any state. Aren't earbuds that are turned off
earplugs?  ;) ;)

Finally got my Alpinestars gloves from the dealer i ordered them through..have been riding with them on for the past couple hours...a note about fitment...they are snug even in their largest size so if you have large hands you may wish to avoid them....However i suspect that given some time they will eventally stretch a bit and loosen up with use.
