Wow I hate getting stranded
« on: March 26, 2008, 02:38:03 PM »
I went to pull the clutch on my Norton and *snap*.  Luckily I was only a couple of towns away and knew someone's house I could park it about 1/2 mile away but what a half mile that was...

Not fun!  Now I have to figure out how to fix it and make sure I have all the tools for the job when I go back.

did the same thing with my R60/5 a few years back on the way to work. I actually found it easier than I thought it would be to shift through the gears and get home. It was only a couple miles, but through city streets. worst part was trying to find neutral the couple times I actually had to stop, then popping it in first to get going again. I agree, not fun. should be pretty easy to swap it out for a new cable though. good luck!

I hate that snap..Same thing happened to me.  I'm sure it has happened to most of us.  I had just left work.  Luckily, work was a Honda dealer, and a guy with a key was with me.  And also luckily, only 6 or 8 blocks.  Unluckily, a red light at every block.

I used to sell a cable repair end. It was made by Barnett. I think you need a lever where the hole goes right thru for it to work, they did work well.. abit bigger than a cigarette butt.

Going to check Barnet Clutch site..

Hognutz lists an emergency cable repair clamp..the one Barnett made... if you want to see what they look like.

Barnett does not have it in their online catalog.

It seems there may have been 2 sizes?..They work well on bike with a thru hole.. I think it would work on the SnortiN NortoN

Here is one on ebay, the bigger one,#190181163970, more money than the Hognutz one.. whopping 6 bux!!

Thanks 754 I'll check it out.

I tried to get it going into gear but there was too much traffic and I was having a really hard time starting out on the flat.  I decided last night (got no sleep) that I'm going to rent a van and get my baby home today.

Ouch!  Hate it when that happens!

Happened to me once, had to go about 15 miles to get home.  Just a lot of "planning ahead" for stops.  I could get it into neutral as I was coasting up to a stop, then "duck-paddle" enough to stomp it into first and keep going.

Nerve wracking at first, but by the end, I was just laughing in my helmet at the stupidity of the whole situation!

Good luck with it!

Funny thing is that I took a ride earlier in the day on my cb750 and stopped the motor at a light on a busy 3 lane highway.  Traffic starts to move and I go to start it...nothing.  I wheel it to the side of the road where 2 cops are standing by their cars wondering what I'm up to and scratch my head for a minute and remember I have a kick starter and get her going.

I go about 1/2 mile and into a BAD neighborhood and it starts to really bog and want to die.  I goosed it for all it was worth to get to a better spot and took the side cover off.  Sure enough one of the connectors had come loose from the regulator and all was well after that.  Bad Karma for me yesterday.

No spare cable or olt time shop nearby that can fix it? Any other norton owners that will lend a cable?

Cheaper than renting a van.

Better buy 2 cables..

I bought the cable and the repair piece for next time.  There are no Norton people around here, in fact I've never seen another vintage Honda cb or Norton ever.  Just some sportbikes and harley people that come out to ride by the beach on labor day and put the bikes away on memorial day :)

I learned long ago to do all my own work.  I found a flatbed guy that will get the bike home for me for $75 but next time I'll be prepared for things going wrong with both of these old bikes.

What you need are some "solderless nipples" NO BAD JOKES NOW!!!!!!!

They really exist and come in all shapes and fix onto the wire with either an allen headed grub screw or a screwdriver slot screw.

WARNING only use them as a get you home thing as they invariably fall off again

LOL - only if you bought a hitch, a Harbor Freight cheapie trailer, and some tie downs!

Then, AND ONLY THEN, will you be prepared for vintage bike ownership!

They're just about the three most valuable tools you can have in your toolbox...  ;D

Kirk you're right but my wife won't let me keep one of those on the property.  What I'd really like is a cheap van, that would be sweet but I'm sure she wouldn't like that in the driveway either.

Bryan.  You use a phrase like "solderless nipples" and don't allow jokes?  You're no fun.
