Name this Pipe!
« on: March 27, 2008, 08:57:20 PM »
For this weeks edition of Name this Pipe, I present to you a 4-1 from a CB550. I've looked all through this forum, and dug for hours on google, and I cant find a thing that looks like it, with its strange bend just after the collector, and the especially long pipe leading to the megaphone. Free beer to whoever can tell me what it is!  ;D

I ruled out Mac, because the Mac pipe for the 550 sweeps to one side, and the muffler attaches just after the collector. This megaphone attaches much further back, where that stainless band clamp is...

It's a Kerker "KR" series pipe, (named after their "Kawasaki Racing" design) circa 1981. It's the same bend as the one in my magazine, and that nifty chrome muffler clamp confirms it's heritage.

When they were available, the buyer got 2 baffles, one for street use, and one for competition. Can I get that beer now mate? Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thanks Terry! The beer is on its way, in a small cardboard raft, that you may see in 3-5 years, depending on how the tradewinds are blowing... ;) And for everyone else, I might name it George.  :D

Lang was a fairly accomplished roadracer here in Canada. Started the exhaust business after retiring. www.hindle.com.

I have a Hindle can I was going to use, very lightweight but a little boisterous, if you know what I mean!

Do post a pic of yours Mr.Rieck, it looks "tres chic" on that MDCB.

inline4, the Kerker for Kawasaki pipe you show is not the same pipe cafe750 is showing.  Close, but no beer.

Terry, you are right about the Kerker baffles, but take another look at the pipe itself.  The sharp bends (especially in number 4 header pipe), right before the collector, distinquishes this pipe as a sophisticated knock-off.  The header pipes are very short, hence the need for those sharp bends.  Also, with such short header pipes, the twist in the collector pipe allows this pipe to sit more snuggly up against the engine, which is another sophistication absent in most Kerker and Mac bends.  Nice pipe, though.  Terry, have you got a picture of the pipe you are referring to, showing these exact features?

Oh no, it's become a "trial by fire", ha ha! (Damn, I really wanted that beer too.............) Here's a pic from my magazine, it's a "black on black" deal so a little hard to see detail, but you can clearly see how well the headers "wrap" around the engine, so I still think it's a Kerker KR. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Ooh, and Hindle are still in business too, so who knows? Maybe they'll make you a pipe if you ask them nicely? ;D

Funny you should ask that Terry. Mark McGrew asked Lang about building some pipes 6 or 7 years while at Daytona. Lang said it wasn't worth it unless he did something like 500 units. Obviously Mark wasn't prepared to front that kind of dough. He must have new CNC mandrel bending stuff by now so one-offs wouldn't be out of the question IMO. Who knows?? ???

Terry, you'll get your beer....what flavor would you like? I found another pipe that was identical, that was on a friend of mines race bike, and he confirmed that it was a Kerker KR....Thanks to everyone!
