How to clean off old gaskets?
« on: April 10, 2005, 02:16:37 PM »
Hey all.

I'm just in the process of putting in a new cam-chain and tensioner.  So far everything is going smashingly well, but I'm wondering how to clean off the old gaskets.  For the most part, they simply peeled off leaving a nice shiny, clean surface.  However, in some spots they did not peel off, not at all.  I tried scrapping them off, but can't really do so without scraping the under surface.  I'm wondering, is there a good way to take them off chemically? (i.e. spray on something that will soak in and all them to just wipe off?) or is there a way to scrape them off gently?  Finally, how badly can I scrape the surface before I'll get leaks when I put it back together?  Obviously a big scrape would not be good but would lots of little scratches hurt?

Anyway, thanks a bunch

I used a spray called "Spray Gasket Remover" I don't remember who makes it, but it's in a big industrial-sized green can. May have been 3M. Spray it, it bubbles, and 3-5 minutes later I used a plastic knife like you get at a picnic.
I took my can from work, but checking at NAPA should provide good results.
Good Luck,

Yeah, I have some Napa brand gasket remover. It takes a couple of applications to get the tough stuff off (like head gaskets). The longer you let it set, the more it turns the gasket to goo. Good luck! ;)

I used the gasket remover from permetex and let it soak 5-10, then have at it with a new razor blade.  Just be careful not to dig into the surface.  Just be careful not to overspray onto the painted case as this stuff doubles as a great paint thinner...... :-[
