It seems reasonable to ask the world to be conscious about energy consuming, but the problem is that you can't never save too much. Google launched "blackle", the same search engine but with a black screen. According to their calculations, if everybody in the world using google used blackle instead there would be a saving of thousands of kilowatts/hour etc.
So the next step should be: why don't we everybody use the computer one hour less every day? The savings would be enormous.
Next step: why don't we shower ourselves less? If we can live with it, there should be a lot of savings in water and energy consumption. The same goes with car washing.
Next step: why don't we go to bed one hour earlier everyday? Not will only sleep better but there would be a lot of energy saving in TV's, computers and light consumption.
For the same reasoning, switch off every other street lamp. Then, exercise will be forbidden for the stupid consumption of oxygen. If people want to lose weight, they will be forbidden to eat more than their daily caloric intake.
I read a book called "the undercover economist" by Tim Harford. He mentioned that he once went to a forum about environment. At the registering boot he was asked where did he come from. "What for?" asked him. "Well, we calculate the impact in the environment of every attendant coming here and will plant as many trees to counteract the negative impact, thus making this forum environment-safe. "In such a case, why holding the forum in first place?".
