Suzuki GS500 is air cooled with carbs and still being made. (2010)
It's based on the 1977 GS400 so has proved itself to be pretty bulletproof (and user friendly)
All they need to do is get rid of the ridiculous supersport fairing and make it more retro

the ninja 500 is also old and doesn't have fuel injection. It isn't water cooled either right? I just think something light with enough performance to be fun but still not excessive or scary for beginners. Fun being the key word. It doesn't seem like it should be too hard to design and market.

What does age have to do with it? They're still being made (well, there's a 2009 model at least). They're water cooled.

The old comment was to suggest things have come along way since the 80's in motorcycle tech so it should be pretty easy to accomplish with todays engineering.

 It's not an 'old' bike.

It's 4 valve/cyl watercooled motor developed from the watercooled400 twin.
I believe it's been developed into a 650 twin with fuel injection
The early KZ400 is a totally different motor.
The Suzuki GS500 twin engine even looks the same as the 1977 400 twin engine
The single cylinder thing looks like it was developed from 1950's~60's Panther drawings with 1930 exhaust ???
There's even a custom one on here already (page 117)

Thats a good point traveler. it just comes to puttin in the time getting your hands dirty. Right now my dirty hands are full with my CB550. I was just reading your thread on yours, thats a nice build. Once I get that one kicking I'm really thinking about the Vince. Even though mechanically I've read a lot of stories that they are less than desirable.

..hasn't stopped me in the past.  ;D

Scheme of worship, of desire, that marked a before and after in the history of the two wheels. Without them the motorcycle would not be what we know, what we love and we can now squeeze a little more, I called sensations.

Seeing it, no question would be:
- With which would you choose? ".
Rather it would be:
What elegiriras not? .- The answer, of course ...
"I want them all please, and I also put two of each ....

Nice, though there isn't much in the way of useful info on the builder.

Nope. 8negro doesn't do much in the way of details.

Not much other than "internal expanding brake" and that may be a reference to the rear but good history here. Drum brake with some cooling machining added?

"At the end of the 40s and start of the 50s, the AJS Porcupine, a 500 cc forward facing parallel twin, and the AJS 7R (32 bhp, 350 cc OHC single) were being raced alongside their AMC stablemates the Matchless G50 (effectively a 500 cc 7R) and by 1951, the Matchless G45 (a 500 cc vertical twin). The AJS Porcupine had been designed for supercharging, before the rules changed banning supercharged racing motorcycles, but even so, Les Graham won the 1949 World Championship on an unsupercharged AJS E90 500 cc Porcupine."

I guess what I was eluding to....was to get the look, but using a more reliable and affordable bike.

Vincents were the thing to have 50 years ago......you can get much more now for next to nothing if you look around and find a titled and complete bike to start with.

Whats the latest on there powertrain. Did they find a replacement for the Buell engine?

i hope the chaps (and miss tracey) at mac don't mind me posting this but below is the email i got from them. they're kind enough with periodic updates. very nice people and love to get input from enthusiasts.

"Dear Bill,

We’re really sorry that we’ve taken so long to get back to you with an update, we’re still a titchy team here at Mac and the project has taken some interesting twists and turns in the last couple of months. Here’s a sense of what we’ve been up to…

We have now heard formally from the ‘Top Brass’ at Harley-Davidson / Buell that we cannot buy new Buell Blast motors from them. They took our request very seriously and treated us professionally and we wish them well for the future of their company but this means we’re going to have to re-think the way we can build more than one Mac motorcycle, we would welcome your thoughts on how you think we could do this. The feedback in favour of the Buell Blast motor over the Yamaha XT 660 motor has been overwhelming and we are sincerely grateful for all your comments and ideas but it looks like nothing comes closer to our original vision and philosophy than an air-cooled thumper.

When we heard from HD we could easily have called it a day and gone back to our day jobs but the whole crew wanted to press on with the prototype because we whole-heartedly believe in Mac and just in case HD change their minds...so the big news is that we’ve made a start on the design-and-build of our first ‘Frankenstein’ prototype, a Mac ‘Spud’, using a second-hand Blast motor. We’ve teamed-up with the renowned British race chassis and performance parts company, ‘Harris Performance’ to build it. It’s worth looking at their website ; www.harris-performance.com to get a sense of their capabilities and we’ve put some photos on our blog, the ‘Chin Wag’. Steve and Lester Harris have been engineering high-performance motorcycles since we were nippers and have a real empathy with what we’re trying to do.

Alongside all this, we’ve also been working with a couple of great design engineers on some improvements to the one Blast motor that we have, we’ve stripped and rebuilt it for use in the prototype and there’s not much we don’t know about these motors now.

Simon Parker at Parker Fabrications in Bournemouth (www.parker-fabrication.co.uk) is going to make the tanks for the prototype, Simon is a true artisan and craftsman and has produced tanks for the Petronas race team and now Maico’s new range of motocross bikes.

A British exhaust manufacturer is going to help us with exhausts for the prototype. We’ll probably make one to satisfy the regulations and one that will get the best out of that Blast motor.

Tracey continues to answer your mail in her 'glamorous pyjamas’ at her kitchen table, well into the early-hours most nights. Mark and Ian at Xenophya are busy working on projects with a couple of well-known motorcycle manufacturers, including Triumph and Royal Enfield, and Ellis’ lounge remains covered in notes, drawings and components for the prototype – no wonder he’s still single !

We promise we’ll keep you posted more frequently from here on, as the prototype makes progress and you’ll be able to see the ‘family album’ on our website.

In closing, we’d just like to say a BIG, BIG THANK-YOU to you for all your support, it means a lot to us and keeps us going when things don’t go quite the way we planned. We sincerely hope that you’ll continue to share the 'vision' of Mac with us, as we will with you.
