The end for HD, Joe Smiths own words on his 80th birthday.

First, let me thank you for the Happy Birthday Wishes...Like I said, I'm honor to have so many people think enough of me to take the time to do that....Face book has overwelmed me...

As a Harley Davidson Drag Racing Enthusiast and as far back as Irwindale Raceway in the mid 60's and the first Honda's show up to lay rubber off the starting line, I knew then that the days of the Harley was limited in Motorcycle Drag Racing...It wasn't long and we had to take a back seat in a Sport we had led for many years...and the Drag Racing World begin to take large gains in ET and Speed by Motorcycle's that were capable of unbelievabe  RPM ranges...

It has led to where we are now and shame on us for letting it get where it is today...No I don't think anyone had any ideal that someday a Street Bike could turn the times that were greater than what a Top Fuel Harley like mine could do in years past...We were lucky to have the AHDRA form and were able to continue racing and today we have some Top Fuel Harley's  putting on shows that no one can deny takes a place in the top Ranks of Motorcycle  Drag Racing...

Do you think it's better that we have street bikes turning times so close to times of some of the fastest Fuel Motorcycles in Drag Racing, my answer is no it's not better...

Hi Joe, I don't think that was what Joe was meaning, and as fast as they are, a Pro Stocker still won't out run a top fueler, not even a top fuel Harley....4 bangers rule, OK ;D

i think it's just a cover of some sort, but i was wondering what exactly it was myself.  i can't tell how big the hub is...

it COULD be that they used two rear wheels??

it's based on this guy:

it's the same gas tank. I dig this one a lot. great vision this guy has to see this beauty hiding in that lump of cruiser. like the sculptor who sees a form hidden in a block of stone.

Ill drop in some new....this is another co workers ride Rich. if your familiar with the Polaris RZR this is the guy who designed it. this is still a work in progress and he is multitasking on cafe projects. but this one is getting close to where he wants it.

Shot from the other side - forks from a later model?

Ahh, there you go

Seriously, you can see an XS650's potential pretty easily - maybe not the late model specials so much - but that's a pretty impressive transition right there.

Poking around some more - that's an interesting frame for 81

Sorry if you guys already know all this about this machine

I caught this one at SPA last year. Sorry for the lousy pic, but unfortunately it was getting very dark, my camera doesn't do well in low-light situations and I didn't have a tripod with me. I love CB750's but this thing really impressed me...   :o  RR

this bike looks super sleek but it seems to just be shortened forks and a cool seat set up everything else(besides the dual rear rims) seems stock....... its a testament to the beauty in simplicity

really? stock? Nothing on the front end is stock. Tank is stock but still relocated. Motor is stock and rear is stock but thats it. I think he made a ton of subtle changes that make it look un touched.

Forks are stock, there's a decent write-up on Virago Tech on how to do it...basically, cut the spring, put spacers to hold the tubes farther into the bottoms, shortens total length and travel...stock headlight, mounts, caliper and rotor..there's a guy on VT that makes adapter plates for the rear to front wheel conversion, there just isn't a very big selection of 16" "front" tires. Here's a pic of the owner riding it, not a lotta ground clearance...
