Here are a couple that I found inspiring.

The second is a 1982 KZ 550 that showed up on Craigslist a few months back.

Stretch it.. it looks optically scrunched..

dont follow the Japan design thoughts of the 80s.. bike have to be a length they deemed ideal...(they finally woke up.)

Got a Q about the wooden seat bike.. Was it a styling exercise..? Did it get taken to shows to guage public reaction?
What kind of feedback did it get? (If you can say)

thats just a concept sketch nothing to take too literaly. we always have to adapt sketches to an engineering package later. And the Vixctory bike Oh yeah just a concept but it is a running concept. all cast in two pieces. fully functional. Google "victory core concept"  or variations of that phrase and you should be able to find it all over the web. its back in europe again on tour.

i like that triumph scrambler a bunch. the kz is kinda cool too.

like that virago a whole lot!

i can't help myself but the chops of the 70's have me hooked. built a few as models... in the 70's, so maybe that's why. probably not too comfortable to ride but who cares?

really like the 'american express' show bike. it's outta sight man!

Rero, I am sure it was that they were stuck in the mindset, that we can do it better..
After 2 decades of trying to sell better, they finally caved, and came out with a traditinally styled chopper.. the Fury..

Its funny, we have a completely different market down under and never saw most of the earlier "chopper" or "cruiser" style bikes until recent years, they were US market specific.I am quite sure they were only trying to get market share, not copy Harley at all. If they were going for a direct clone it would never had been allowed to have been sold in the US and with my experience with Japanese craftsmanship, would have done it better. They were never out to copy anything, just give it their own interpretation. I have Some Japanese Gibson replica's that blow the Gibbo's away with both build quality and playability which proves that if they want too, they could build anything and perfect it fairly quickly, thats one thing i admire about the Japanese, they are master craftsmen of the highest caliber.

The Japan folks can for sure build very high quality products..\

When they began to  tap into the cruiser market, they appeared to assume that people wanted better quality than the Amercan built bikes. They missed some of the core reasons Amerca loved their custom bikes.

Look at the Fury, long raked frame, and I think maybe even raked trees.... too bad they did not go that route, 10 yrs or more, earlier.. it would have made them money..

I don't know what your point is Joe, What Frank was saying was not relevant to our market, we didn't have a huge cruiser following here then, and the Japanese were after market share in the US nothing else. And if you don't like the fact that i said Harley's don't handle then you must be the only guy on the planet that hasn't worked that out yet. Only pointing out the facts....

Ooooohhh... nice.

I really want to build a thumper.  And one like that, with a Beeza DBD34GS powerplant, slung low in a modern frame.  Well, it just wakes me a little dizzy.

Now if only I could convince the wife to let me buy an ABSAF Goldstar or Molnar Manx motor......
Take care,
David
