what is the thought behind the 'exhaust bar'? for regidity/looks/gives special powers?
anyone know if that is a sportster seat?

The exhaust bar is most likely an equalization tube, to equalize the pulses between the exhausts, adds some effective length to an otherwise short (too short) system. Some schools of thought give "special powers" to equalization type devices. Certainly just being there gives the separate pipes some stability, but i don't think that was the primary reason.

I think they were stock on some sportsters from the factory.

I guess not. Here's a discussion of the equalization or crossover tube. Seems to beneift Harleys especially. You'll have to scroll down a bit for the answer.

Stock head pipes with balance tube, and Yes, H-D accessory seat on stock fender (cut down).

Seat should be close to fitting Honda frame, might not cover front part as well, loook at one on a bike & measure.

I as used on Triumph twins, Suzuki Katana & Bandit 4 cyl, and loads of other bikes I can't think of a present.  ;)
It mainly helps mid range torque
On most bikes ( the ones I've cut exhausts up) there is only a smallish hole in the main pipe (smaller than the cross/balance pipe) so it also has some sound deadening effect (Helmholtz resonator probably?)

Here's another option for a seat. You might give them a call and see if they know if their seat fits a CB550.
http://www.storzperf.com/index.html

Here's a pic. You might do a little cutting on it for a better fit.

and here's another bike just cause it's that kind of thread.

Four Pack is a sweet bike.  Infact, it was my wallpaper for a while.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Well the base bike is a ZX10, the rest of it is photoshop.

And if I am going to give both my kidneys for it they better at least fix the front end.

I don't usually go for that style either, which is why I can't help thinking, "man, how much cooler would that look with NO fender at all?"
