couldn't be too hard to figure out how it's done....Honda has the info.

The 125cc 5 cylinder and 250cc Six Cylinder full race, DOHC motors are really something!  Both Championship engines.

    I remember reading the same article.  Honda actually has no blueprints now.  Can't remember if they said the prints were lost in a fire or what, but I distinctly remember reading  they didn't want to slice the head(s) because they had because there was no way to reproduce them.  It makes sense.  I've NEVER seen pics of one in any place other than the ones posted on page 173.    Looks like the same ones from the mag.  
    And it probably has something to do with how fast Honda's R&D worked back then, working from a prototype to the final version.  They changed things and modded them for testing faster than they could make records.  
    Also,  I think the motor when all was said and done weighed about 65lbs; lots of magnesium.    The parts the fabricator was working with came directly from Honda.  The crankshaft proved especially difficult because it was a press fit and everything had to be aligned very precisely.  I think he had to build a jig of sorts just for this operation.  

Probably from the 80s, judging by the clothes and use of TAPE recorders.

why do they rev the crap outa the bike like that for sooo long,... and then shut off to a crowd on fans clapping.. what am i missing... is that why i have to do to get chic's? LOL or is there a more scientific reason for this?

No...it's called stupidity.

revving an engine when it is NOT under load like that is how you spin a bearing.

Most of the vid's on YouTube....the guys are revving them like that...when all I want to hear is it at idle.

I don't know if it's stupidity... a lot of vintage race videos have some guy revving the piss out of motor exactly like that.  the builders are usually watching. if it was stupidity they'd be panicking.

I've revved plenty of engines and never spun a bearing.

I've thrown a rod and seized an engine before, but that was on purpose... and it took 5-6 minutes of redline to do it.


now revving a flat head ford is a different story.

IMO, it's stupid, the original Honda engineers didn't do that back in the 60's.
They would warm up at constant rpm, high enough to  maintain pressure andget oil circulating plus thrown around for area's that need 'splash' lubrication. I believe it was pretty impossible to hold a 'low' rpm  on the 125 though because there was 'no' flywheel effect so warm up was done around 6,000rpm? ( I forget where I heard it, I was only a kid at the time)

Speaking of little ladies... Mine has been helping me work on bikes since she was 4, she is 11.5 now and thinks motorcycles are pretty cool. We are building her a cafe 350 for when she turns 16 and are looking for a moped. She can ride a moped around the 'hood when she turns 12! She bled her first set of brakes at 5 and took her bike completely aprt and back together again around 8..lol.
I love that there are kindred spirts out there of all ages. Old bikes will never die as long as there are a few kids that are exposed to it every year.

According to the article I read Honda has no records. I'll have to get the magazine Monday and see if I can find a link online.

      cause if it was "so bad for the motor" I think the professionals standing around would stop the guy.

they all seem to do it, just search old rc166 videos on youtube and about every related bike from that era pops up with some old guy revving the #$%* out of it.

so with a little research I found out they topped out around 18-22,000rpm  depending on if it was a 5 or 6 cyl bike

so the revving that they're doing sounds to me to be around 7-8k rpm,  that's like me revving mine to 3000 to warm it up.

By the way that's Nobby Clark blipping the throttle, and he was the man. Looks like it was partly a show for the crowd.

Those things were race engines in the purist sense of the word. The revs fall off as quickly as they build, virtually no crankshaft effect. They revved to the moon, a little throttle blipping to 7-10 grand wouldn't hurt em.

I saw one at Mosport and even doing a few hot parade laps it could be heard all the way around the track.

Take the rotor off your crank, and run CR 31's with no idle circuits and you too will learn to blip your throttle to keep running..

 Plus, no prizes for fouling plugs...

 Didya know, surprised it wasnt mentioned here, that (as far as I know) they used warm up plugs the get it warmed up, then switched to a running plugs.. different heat range..

Yea, that is one of the more interesting exhausts I have seen on a 750, I like it. They are clearly not done with this build and they have some cool stuff they started.. Hope they finish it and post the end result.

I've been to Motegi in Japan..where they restore..still run these older racers for exhibition.  They rev it like that..as mentioned before..because there's very little reciprocating weight on the crank..et al..and they need to bump start them..which they don't want to do over by letting the engine die until it's warmed-up.

They wanted very little reciprocating weight in the engine because it accelerates/decelerates much faster through the turns..etc.

Nowadays..I'm told..they use GFI mapping/electronics to control acceleration/deceleration profiles..so you don't hear that continual "goosing" of the throttle..like the old days.

The guys @ Motegi also told me that they do some of that for show..for spectator benefit though.
