Yeah..that old school metal forming is getting to be a lost art. Guess that's also why custom bikes that are built that way..cost over $100K sometimes!

Nice to see that stuff in action..while it lasts.

Actually many people DO posess the tools..

If you dont have a TIG, gas welding will work..

Most of what you need or can get by with, can be obtained for the price of a custom made fuel tank..

what is missing in most scenarios is, determination ..and drive...

Too bad fibreglass, does not polish up like AL..
Be a lot easier..

Got a guy here locally, absolutely aced Aluminum forming in five years or less.... in fact Ron Fournier actually looked for him at a bike trade show, because he wanted to meet him..

You forgot 'space'. Things like an English Wheel aren't exactly small tools.

You dont need an English wheel to make an oil tank. It may help on some gas tanks.. A shot bag and planishing hammer will do most of it. The wheel, is good for fenders.

Most wheels are far bigger than you need for bike work, you can get away with a benchtop, the size of a small 3 wheel bandsaw...

Most English wheels you see are designed for car size stuff.

754, all the stuff I've seen done in person was for vintage cars. Didn't know there was such a thing as a 'bench top' wheel. Got any more info on these?

There are wheel & anvil kits out there for building your own. If the wheel diameters were smaller it would be better for working on tanks.

If you had 12 or 14 inches of throat, would be fine. You may have to run the wheel on a stand but it can be tucked away wnen not in use. A sturdy stand could hold, a wheel, planishing hammer and other stuff, if they are removeable.

Actually its a '81 TZ 250 with a RD400 motor in it.
Good power to weight and it turns well.
I have some dial in to do on it (jetting & rear spring).
I got it as an unfinished project - not sure if it ever rolled.
It fell into my lap.
Quick engine in it though.

Street legal and plated.
Smokes the smokers!

I imagine that being good at forming aluminum, and word of mouth could be lucrative...even in tough economic times....being skilled at something can be good.

FWIW, Max's CB is also VERY clean.
