sometimes.. asking a simple question on a forum, can speak huge volumes on what the members are like...

Deep, man.  Deep........ :)

But you have it backwards.  It was in fact a very difficult question with a very simple answer:

   $3.50

My conclusion,
is my opinion only.

They asked a reasonable question, and were not treated all that well.

Some seemed worried that they may be reselling, that does not bother me in the least, nor affect my answers.

I dont think the way the thread went, was a huge credit to this forum, again ,only my opinion.

I prefer to try to help folks, I have failed at times, but I certainly do not mind sharing the knowledge I do have of these bikes.

This to is my opinion, " He asked a very leading question and got an answer in return. It's a shame he is so thin skinned that he resorted to name calling right off the bat. Must be his first time on the internet.

Very few people on this forum get answers that are right to the point and don't contain some form of sarcasm.

Is scarcasm not a form of an opinion?

And yes, even you 754, are guilty of your own form of scarcasm/prejudice.

This forum got along just fine without me and I'm sure it can survive without indy750 or what ever his name is.

This post needs to die."

I don't know how many forums you are on 754, but I am on quite a few. Plus I am very involved locally in the bike hobby. Do you remember that old axom about first impressions and putting your best foot forward? well human nature is human nature and this translates to the internet too.

When a person's first post is asking about value it usually is a give away for their motives for joining the forum in the first place. The same thing happens in real life, if i get a guy asking me all sorts of cb750 questions and he is leading off with value questions it is very suspicious.

I like to help people but I am not in this hobby to make money off of it and I did not spend all this time and energy learning about these bikes and fostering a local community so someone who has no intentions of being an active member can make a profit off of it without putting something in. If a person has a genuine desire to learn about these bikes then I will put my self way out for them, if a person is here just for a greenback dollar well I wish you well but unless you are kicking some of that dollar back to the forum....do it the real research like the rest of us did. I think that is only fair. I mean should we really help the pirates loot our village?

I don't think anything was unreasonable about his question. I have asked plenty of times about the value of things. I think his timing was poor. It is understood that if you enter a forum asking these sort of value questions then you are signaling you have less than honorable intentions.

I am personally pissed off that he has come here to trade on our good will for his financial gain. I am even more pissed off that he was deceptive about it and even tried to put a little guilt back on us with his tactics. I have no problem saying he is not trustworthy and not a person with whom a deal should be made based solely on the actions here.

754, I don't think there is anything wrong with this being an open forum for all to ask. However we can't all be babes in the woods about this stuff and just blindly sell our own hobby into the people that seek only to profit off of it. I respect your opinion but I don't have to agree and I think there are many here that feel the same.

There seem to be inconsistencies in his story here and his ebay auction.  In his auction he states "I know nothing about bikes so im lost...".  But here he said he rebuilt the engine in 5 hours.  I wouldn't ride a bike put together in 5 hours by someone that knows nothing about bikes.

There isn't a battery because the PO took it.  I take that to mean when you show up, there is no way to hear it run.

This guy sounds like a scammer.

I think geeto67 brings up some good points. If we cater to people who just want to profit off our hobby and couldn't care less otherwise, we are helping to inflate the market prices to a level nobody, including ourselves, will be able/willing to pay in the
future. Parts will go up accordingly in price as well. Look what happened to the american muscle cars. Pretty soon, all that'll be left will be the junk that's "worth" thousands. Just like that "sandcast" cam chain roller on E bay last week that looked like it was just brought up from the bottom of a sh1t pond. I sure hope the sohc4 market stays relatively stable. It's one of the things that you can still enjoy and
not have to be wealthy.

With all the BS he's slinging, yeah it's a bad thing.  I doubt he'd go through with the auction unless it fetches his $2k target.

geeto67,
I dont understand the, traded our goodwill for his personal gain??

Does this mean that if someone asks a repair question, and you find out later they repaired for another party and got paid, that you would then change your opinion?

Some of us do some of this (bike work) for a living or for finacial reasons...  it just how some of us survive. If I choose to answer a question, I do it of my own freewill, could care less what someone gains... of course there are limits..
Like if someone clearly is not capable of handling a repair & we walk them through it and they are doing it for money..

This issue speaks to our goodwill and good judegement.  On this forum, we expect to give advise freely and we hope to benefit by receiving advise when asked.  We expect that the advise exchanged is based in fact or otherwise stated as conjecture.  In that regard and more, we are a community that share a common set of guiding principles.  Its because this thread highlights conflicting principles that it has hit a chord.

Why do I have no problem in a situation where someone uses this forum for profit.  e.g. At a parts shop: the sales clerk referred a customer to this forum when she'd asked about a subtle installation issue.

Why do I have a problem when the situation is for profit. e.g. Tell me if this part is "sandcast" because I want to list it for its maximum value.

The reason for my apparent cognitive dissonance is in what I perceive the recipients motives to be - honourable self interest, or carelessly using others.

No one needs to get precise about what honourable or careless means, suffice it to say we would not draw the boundary in the same place, but the concept remains.

The poster knew this honourable-vs-careless distinction existed, and hence intentionally misled the forum by suggesting "honourable" meant his giving back mechanical knowledge in exchange for carelessly using others. Now that we know the mechanical knowledge was a dubious claim, this ploy is exposed.  Outrageous!

Most importantly, I want to say that I appreciate the forum and feel sorta like I'm home when I'm here.  I have to agree that when someone comes to exploit the forum, I don't feel a need to be apologetic when there's a negative reaction.  In many ways, we're all looking for a place to call home.  I'd like to say this is one place I feel "at home".  When it smells like someone does not have the loyalty or care for this forum that I do, I look with a jaundice eye at their intent... much like when someone becomes unwelcome in one's home.

We can make logical rules to govern how we should behave, and worse, how we should think or feel about certain types of behavior on this forum but like government, when you add rules on top of rules to manage exceptional, convoluted situations instead of the norm, it's real easy to lose track of the fundamentals.

I find the discussion that has come out of this situation intriguing and hope that it has been unifying and defining (in a good way) for the forum.

Again, I greatly appreciate the forum... what a great place!

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
