Tyre choices
« on: April 28, 2008, 02:30:15 PM »
I know its been covered before (and im sure its been done many times) but...

My 500 is nearing being ready for the MOT, maybe at the end of this week...

the rear tyre is a tubeless (fitted with a tube) "KINGS-TIRE" 110/90/18. Plenty of tread with quite a modern tread pattern.

Front is a rather retro looking Avon Speedmaster Mk2, 3.25-19, legal tread but i dont feel ill have much confidence in it.

What are my options for a good sticky modern tyre? i presume the rear will stay a 110/90, the equivalent for the front is 100/90/19 i guess? I presume i need to stick with tubes even though I'm going to use tubeless tyres?

Out of interest my foreman at work has a XTX yamaha, how do they seal spoked wheels to use tubeless?

Tyre? Oh you mean TIRE! ;D

Anyways, you will need a tube. Our spokes will always need a tube unless you figure out a good way to seal the rim that lasts.
A tube drops 1 speed rating on the tire, keep that in mind.
keep the same aspect ratio. I.E. 90 series. If you can, it is usually best to stick with the same tire style on both ends. So if you can find the same model as what you have on the back. 100/90 - 19 should be fine I think.

Just a tip...If you use the search function, and look up tire/tyre, you will find enough information on 'em to choke an elephant... ;)

I have Continentals, they're not for everyone but maintain a stock look while being made from modern materials. I had Speedmasters on my bike and dreaded going over grooved pavement or metal bridges. Metzlers and Avons are also good choices esp. for cafe bikes.
