Will this chain work for my bike?
« on: March 31, 2008, 12:41:05 PM »
I have been reading all day about chains since I am needing one and came across this on ebay.  I was wondering if it would work for my 78 550k?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Yamaha-YZ125-YZ-125-250-WR-TT-520-112-Drive-Chain-New_W0QQitemZ180227133618QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item180227133618

Its says it is for a yamaha yz but it is a 520 non o-ring and its 112 links long.

Thanks
Jay

The stock 550 uses a 530 chain.  Are you planing to replace your sprockets to fit the 520 chain?

Nope.  I thought I read that a 530 chain would rub but I must have been mistaken.  So I guess a 530 non o-ring chain is the key?

Maybe something like this.

A 530 oring chain will rub unless you make modifications to the front sprocket to gain about 1/8 inch extra clearance from the engine casework.

A 520 oring chain will work if you replace the sprockets to match the 520 roller width.  Same is true for 520 standard chain.

A 530 standard chain was the stock chain on the CB500 and 550 and fits without issues, of course.

Thank you very much.

So will any 530 chain fit as long as it is enough links?

PS TT you know the answer to my other post?

So this chain here says it is for our bikes but it is an o-ring chain.  Will this work without the clearance issues?

No.  Do not use an o-ring chain on a 550.  Like TT stated, there are chain width clearance issues on the 550 and it will most likely rub a hole in your engine case.  Just go with a standard chain, or if you feel like a bigger project, get the 520 sprockets and a 520 o-ring chain.

You seem determined to ignore good advice. ???

If you want to run anything other than a standard 530 chain, you'll either have to switch to 520 sprockets and chain, or deal with a hole in your crankcase.

Those were the chains that are talked about in the faq's.  If its a factory chain then I will get a factory chain.  Is there a place to get standard chain without having to order it from honda?

Scratch that I found these on ebay and at 100 links they should fit with a few taken out.

I always get chains from www.loudfastugly.com.  If I remember correctly, he sells Tsubaki standard chain for $22 plus $9 shipping.
