New guy with exhaust question
« on: April 02, 2008, 12:11:32 PM »
I've been lurking around the forums for awhile and have learned alot! My brother and I this summer are going to start the project of rebuilding my dads 1975 CB750, as of right now it is in about 3 rubber maid containers, so it will be a challenge! I have had one question and have been surfing Google and email people for awhile, he seems to have bought a different exhaust for it but I don't know what kind it is. Can any of you knowledgeable folks identify it and tell me if its any good? I have the original exhaust but it is kinda thrashed.

9765 is engraved in small print on each of the 4 header pieces, along with the numbers 1-4 so you can install them properly I assume.

There is another 4 into 2 exhaust in a box in the basement. I assumed it was the original one as they look very used and the bike only has 6,000 some miles on it. Sorry I should have specified what I meant by, is it good? The tailpipes on this exhaust look freaking huge compared to the original "stock" set so I was wondering if it was all flash and no go, or if it would work just as good or similar to the stock set.

When these bikes were new there were many many after market systems available. The vast majority of them were poorly engineered, fit like crap and actually diminished performance. Depending on what kind of shape your bike is in and what you want to end up with it when you are done, should depend on what direction you go with.

Totally bone stock bikes will be worth the most now. Your bike came with an HM341 4 into 4 exhaust. If you are willing to pop for one from your local dealer they are available again, though I can't say for how long and if and when Honda runs out again, if they will remake them. Expect to pay around $1200.00 or so for a complete exhaust, but if your bike is really clean but just missing the exhaust it may be worth it.

You can also get an earlier HM300 exhaust which will fit exactly the same but will sound much better.

I just had to make this same decision for my 1971 K1 and got a complete brand new HM300 exhaust. Luckily the condition of the bike warrants the expense. When I got mine last week, Honda had about 35 complete sets of HM300 pipes left in the warehouse.

Phil,

you wrote that you bought new exhaust system from Honda:  I didn't know they were keeping stock for such old  bikes!

Hummm...  Do you think they have exhaust system for the CB350F???

Service Honda has a "stock" set of new pipes for about $750.

Raynald,

I would call your local dealer and ask them. You may be surprised with the answer!

I think Honda finally realized that it is good PR to have beautiful stock 30+ year old bikes running around, so they started remaking parts that were in demand. I thought it was all over when Old Man Honda passed away, but this is a good sign!

KeithB what and where are Service Honda?

So do you guys think I would get better performance out of selling these and buying some stock ones? The bends in the pipe just seem kinda restrictive to me.

Well, stock ones are mega $$$

A nice 4-1 like a Kerker or something would give a little boost in performance, as well as look nice.

Sure, if you wish to spend more time near Red line RPM.  But, the 4 into 1 will reduce power at normal street use RPMs.  The looks thing is rather subjective.

Oldfett,

Well that depends on the rest of the bike. What kind of shape is the bike in? If it is really clean and original (except for th exhaust) I would say go for it as having the stock exhaust on the bike, will not only make the bike run better, it will increase its value.

I buy most of my "running" parts from my local Honda shop, it's great that they still carry the stuff. If anyone here gets a slightly dented #3 HM300, I had it in my hands, and sent it back, because for what I paid for those four pipes, I wanted straight ones... :D ... CB350F exhaust...stuff of legend and fable...Honda doesn't have 'em, and when I find a set, I am framing them under glass, and hanging them on my wall!
