Just got my bike running! I am the smartest man alive!!!
« on: July 06, 2008, 08:08:29 PM »
Well just got her running today after tinkering since the second week of March.  Let me just say, waiting for parts is the most time consuming process and after this, I think I'll start hoarding extra just in case.  No one here does that do they??

  List of things repaired done:

Carbs rebuilt (thanks Kotkehead)
Replace airbox (thanks Kotkehead)
New airbox rubbers, bandclamps
Uni filter
Clubman bars
Rear/Front turn signals, bulbs
Spliced in new ground wire (what a beeyotch)
New rectifier
Cleaned all electrical connections
Mounted Seat properly
New keys
Valve job
Replacement chain tensioner w/ all that goes with it  ::)
Adjusted clutch
Adjusted point gap
Adjusted valves
New fuel lines
New right side controls from CBR 600 F1(?)
New grips
New spark plugs
Fresh Honda HP4
New filter
New Oil filter housing bolt - guess what happened there

Very happy w/ the results, though there's a slight bit more rattling going on than I remember from the valvetrain, think I need to double check the valves.  Other than that, she starts w/ one kick every time.  Interestingly enough, right after I put on my new right side controls,  the starter button worked great, now she won't.  Have to look into that as well.  And my rear brake is well, a mystery.
On that note, the F3 controls have the two wires, not sure what the connections are called, that accept the two blades for a brake switch.  I have to change my brake line out in the front as it's about to give up the ghost, so I figger I'll go for a braided one and get rid of the switch while I'm at it.  Still plan on rebuilding the master and putting on the EBC pads.  Anyone used these?
Things on the way include new rear tire, riding gloves, and some new throttle cables, just in case.  The PO put on a D404 FRONT on the rear!  I'll putt around the neighborhood until I get the new one.
If anyone's having problems removing and reinstalling their cam, chain, and tensioner, check the FAQ's as the manual's are kinda lacking.

One last thing, that turn signal buzzer, is it supposed to just honk a couple of times and then go silent?  I'm looking for a left side cover if anyone has one.

I'll post up some current pics tomorrow after work when I get some light. Until then, savor my rear brake and the master I'm contemplating.

Whenever I hear anyone proclaim their intelligence, I alway thing of Homer Simpson singing.  "I am so smart.  S M R T."

Good job.

Haha, that IS a good line.  It's been about perservering so far, though I really shouted that from the rooftops after I got it running today.  I just reconnected everything back up after testing the coils (4.9 ohms), and figured out that the connectors that I'd made were done too tight, severing about 70% of the wires.  Stripped a little, new connectors, and WHAMMO, she's alive.  Still straddling the bike, "I AM THE SMARTES MAN ALIVE!!!".  At the first syllable of ALIVE it promptly sputtered and died.  Oh yeah, I guess it would probably run longer with the fuel tank attached.  This is how the rest of it went.

Rated G version.

Started, died again.

"Well I'll be hornswaggled."

Adjusted idle, started again, died again.

"Fiddlesticks."

Not to be deterred, I reset the IAC AND the idle knob.

PurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrBLAT!PurrrrrrrrrrrrrBLAT, killed it.

"Shucky darn."

Adjusted the IAC again and it runs pretty well now, albeit for the valvetrain clatter.

It's amazing when they finally wake up from the long sleep eh!
I'm becoming a believer in that these bikes make certain noises and you ignore most of it.
I'm hoping getting carbs sycronised will remove most of my clutch rattle.
Nice looking little bike, what the devil happened to the tank, did someone run acid in it?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

About the tank, I dunno, but you'd think that wouldn't you?  I mean, who splashes gas all over and then leaves it there that long?  I think I'll do the valves again anyway, couldn't hurt anyway.

Nice one, i've just come in from the garage after hearing my 400/4 running for the first time since i bought it ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

My only problem at the moment is a leak from the two right carbs, ie, the two highest ones when on side stand. All carbs rebuilt using keyster kits. I think its leaking around float bowl seals???? Anyone else have the same problem, and if so how did you cure it ??? ??? ??? Seems strange it's only two out of the four carbs???

Once again fastbroshi, well done, it's a good feeling isn't it ;D

Regards

Could be sticky floats, incorrect float height, debris in the fuel inlet valves(what the floats turn off and on), or the overflow stand pipes could have cracks.

If it is leaking around the seals, they could have been pinched during installation.

Mine leaked after I replaced float valves so I switched the No1 carb floats/valve and pivot pin to the No4 carb expecting that one would now leak and the other not, strange but true they sealed up beautifully and no trouble since.
Not sure what I did but it's fixed now.

I'm not much of a brand whore, but I listened to the *ahem* higher ups and bought all Honda gaskets for my carbs, no probs.  I'm not sure how your bowls' seals are, but mine seemed to made a little to large to account for shrinkage. So they wanna pop out just a little bit.  I just made them stay in place w/ a little grease to make sure they didn't get skewed while putting the bowls on.
