if you put the spark plug wires on in the wrong order would it still run...just not as good or would this cause it to not run at all.

You can swap 1 & 4 or 2 & 3 at will, each pair goes to the same coil. Don't swap 1 & 2 or 3 & 4 though, you'll be running on only two  cylinders and one of the others may backfire through its carb (this can burst and/or light the air filter on fire).
