1977 cb550k basic wiring for startup
« on: April 04, 2008, 09:09:53 AM »
Hey guys, I just tore down my bike and would like to have my wiring set-up basic. Just enough for the bike to start and run..Would anyone be able to help out. I would like to use the electric ignition to start for now while i run tests. Kinda like the dyno setup where all u have is the coils and such..I just need to learn how to do this..Any help would be greatly appreciated..

http://slickschoppers.com/TechArticles/honda_techarticles.htm  go to the universal wiring-2 page diagrams , I believe in only the simplest of wiring setups,no speggetti factory wiring,   this 750 setup could be applied to the 550 i guess

Just enough for the bike to start and run..

Run a wire from the battery + terminal to the black/white wire going to the ignition coils, and ground the battery - terminal.  Done and done :)

Check out the interactive wiring diagrams here:

www.oldmanhonda.com

You can select which systems you want to see and turn off anything you don't need.  For engine operation, the coil circuit is all you need... till the battery dies.  Add the alternator circuit if you would like the engine to run more than 20 minutes.

To be street legal, you'll need a little more.

Thanks alot for the replys!! It would be sick to just have a new harness with the basics.

ignition
coils
etc..

rear light
headlight
blinkers
horn

I live in Austin,Tx so I assume this is all u need. mainly looking to run a new harness with the basics running under my seat..hey, where can i find those hex bolts i see on some bikes to replace those #$%*ty phillips on the engine..I still cant budge them off the clucth/sprocket plate..Pissin me off..Would heating them up help at all?

Anyways, step 1 is the new harness.I have seen on the chopper hondas where they would do this with there own harness with new throttle grips and controls..Looks sick..And that rear harley wheel I saw on the forum is dope!!! Will be doing that too..

Thanks again guys!!

An impact driver does the best job.  Get a rubber mallet too.  Allen bolt sets can be gotten from most of the on-line ourfitters such as http://www.z1enterprises.com/ or http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/

Running total loss, your battery should go a few hours. If you have a brakelite hooked up it will go down quicker.

I have run around town on a bike not charging, just run off the battery.. eventually it will stall when you apply brakelite, then if you unhook that you will get further. ( just in case you have to try to make it home by battery only if your charging system packs it in..)
