Question on HD Cylinder Studs
« on: April 08, 2008, 05:23:59 AM »
As I was looking at my engine block last night, I had a question about the HD studs on the 750 engine.

The oil shoots up from the block along the studs up to the head. The HD are much thicker than the stock studs. Does this effect oil flow at all?

I'm no expert, but I would have said that the 2 restrictors that control the amount of flow to the head, have very small holes, therefore the area beneath them even with HD studs, is still enough not to make any difference.

Good analysis. No problems with oil flow Bob.

Good question.  I wondered about this myself recently, but decided that if there was a problem, someone would have noticed it by now :D

I hope not as I just got my engine back in the frame with new HD studs installed (thanks Mike!  ;)) and will soon hopefully have that sought-after leak free engine....

cheers

Mike,
Do you know what the diff in diameter is between the two is? It doesn't look like much, if any.

All best,
Ben

If you make it leak free Andy you will HAVE to share your secret. I still haven't been able to make it past the 10,000 mile point without those familiar weeps starting up. Admittedly I have overworked engines that get ridden hard but just once I would like to keep Mike's headwork shining for more than a year. I'll be applying all that I've learned to the new engine in hopes of joining the venerable "leak-free" club.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame
