Final Drive Flange removal
« on: April 05, 2008, 09:24:43 AM »
Hello, I just removed the rear wheel on my 1971 CB750 K1 and want to remove the final drive flange. This is the part that the rear sprocket is bolted to. I thought that this part should basically pop out. Is there anything holding this in, besides 37 years worth of road grime? If there is something what do I have to do to remove it correctly?

TIA, Phil

just road grime and friction against the cush drive.

leave sprocket on for a handle and work your way around while standing on the tire or holding rim with your knees.

Just pull it off.

There is a spacer goes into the bearing that likes to fall out and pick up dirt :o.. dont lose that..

Well I brought the wheels to my local Honda dealer to spoon off the tires and the mechanic FINALLY got it off! It put up quite a struggle. I think the major problem was the o ring on the outer portion where the bearing is was really swollen. I thought these things usually fell out. ???

Thanks, Phil

I can assure you that if you lit up the tire often, this would never be a problem.. :o

Never heard of one that stuck.. next time put a 2x4 across the tire on each side of the sprocket & pry it off..

The problem is that the bike hasn't moved in at least 14years. I think the mechanic was just as surprised as you were!

Phil,

I used to have a similar bike - it was pristine but had sat for 15 yrs and EVERY bolt was stuck on that bike. Made every job so much harder. Good luck with it!

cheers

Andy,

Luckily the flange has been the hardest part to remove. I brought it into work and cleaned it off in the parts washer and it now looks brand new Thank god for chain lube!!

Hey I sent you a PM, did you get it?

Cheers, Phil
