Just took my cylinders to the machine shop and was told to use a drop of WD40 on the piston skirt when re-installing, not copious amounts of oil, as it will lead to varnish and poor compression.

Have not seen this mentioned on here..
For decades, I alwys put the gap on the top ring, 180 degrees from the midpoint between exh valve and sparkplug.
