spin-on filter adapter stuck!
« on: April 06, 2008, 11:54:28 AM »
went to change my oil today and when i spun off the filter, the adapter came off with it.
damn filter is still stuck to the adapter!

i'm hoping that letting it sit for a bit will relieve some pressure.
tried setting the adapter in a vice, tightened a steel hose clamp around the filter, then wacking the clamp to twist it off.  no luck.

any advice?

Same thing happened to me too.  I put the stuck on filter in a vice and put electrical tape over the threads would screw into the motor.  Then I used 2 screw drivers.  Once through the adapter and the other leveraged between the tapes threads and the other screw driver and turned it loose.  In doing so I guess I didn't have enough tape on the threads because it screwed up 1 thread and doesn't work now.  So much for 70 bucks for an adapter.  Sucks because I oiled the seal and only hand tightened the filter too.

I'm back to using the stock cartridge/housing.  One thing wrong with the adapters is that they are perfectly round and don't have the locking tab that the stock filter housing has.  Now I have a paperweight.

If you only screwed up one thread you should be able to save it.
Worst case get a sharpening file (used for chain saws, small file with triangular cross section) and use it to remove/reshape the damaged section of thread. You will probably remove about 1/3 of 1 or 2 threads this way. It's not like this thread takes a lot of loading.

Never had the problem, but trying to envision the situation. How about putting the filter in a vice, if you have one wide enough, heck crush the filter some if you have to, then try a large strap wrench on the adaptor. ???  You can get a good deal of torque using a large strap wrench. Just a thought.

I can't find a pic of my adapter here but if someone else can, could you post it? (I'm at work)

The "spiggot bolt" on mine has a large hex "head" on it so you can torque it onto the engine block with a socket wrench, that way the spin on filter spins on, and spins off.........

Those EBay adapters look nice, but aren't particularly well designed. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Grab the part you don't care about in the vise.  In this case that would be the filter.  Use a strap wrench on the billet adapter to turn it off the filter. . . . . Products like this are OK till they become disfunctional.  Then it's time to chuck em!

That is the one that I have/had.  Looks nice but it will spin off with the filter as there is no way to really torque it to the motor.  Terry, how much for yours?

$75.00 for mine Chris, and if you want a filter included (small BMW "K" series bike filter) add another $10.00.

Airmail is around $30.00, I've trimmed 'em down as much as I can, but I can't take much more off them. I'll post a pic when I get home. Cheers, Terry. ;D

That is the one that I have/had.  Looks nice but it will spin off with the filter as there is no way to really torque it to the motor.  Terry, how much for yours?

In the case of that type of spin on adaptor...
In a pinch I would take 2 bolts, or screwdrivers, insert then in the holes, 180 deg. from each other.
Then use a bar/tube/2X4/whatever to tighten/loosen them by using the bolts/screwdrivers as drive tangs for the spin on adapter.

Actually, I would make a wrench that would do it properly by using all the provided holes.
I would imagine that unity is aluminum, wouldn't want to damage/distort it.

I agree terry, those are poorly made.
I have made a set of automotive oil filter adapters for myself, and use a lg. hex head to torque it down/remove it as well.

Just seemed right to me.
I love having access and knowing how to use lathes/mills.

My thoughts exactly.  In a pinch, I'd make a tool out of a piece of 2x4 and a couple of bolts, with a hole drilled to clear the threaded nipple of the adapter.  Should suffice to at least get the adapter off of the oil filter.

I have the http://myworld.ebay.com/ebaymotors/huntech2006/ huntech2006 one off ebay and the instructions are pretty clear about how to torque it up. They suggest the use of a peg spanner (which I have) and I used that (method as also described by Soos) I agree that a hex head center bolt would have been nice but the quality and the price of the huntech oil filter adapter is excellent in my opinion. Not had much bother with mine although I only hand tightened the oil filter canister and everything was fine when it came to unscrewing it.

Just passing this along as a possible installation tip.....

Many moons ago.... I replaced an oil filter and coated it's gasket with grease instead of oil... they say not to but not why... oops.... 6 months later and it was like the ^%$#% filter was welded to the engine!

Perhaps a thin smear of grease on the adapter's o-ring during installation would have the same effect?

Happened to me with the same adapter and I used a vice.  You have probably over tightened and possibly messed up the threads.  That is what happened to me and upon starting the bike all the oil went into the street.  I ditched the setup and will get one of Terry's when he's making them again.

Okey Dokey, well El Huero Loco convinced me to make him an adapter this weekend, so while I was at it I did 3 more, and they are up for grabs. the price is $75.00 US plus $35.00 US airmail to the US, which is a bit harsh I know, so I've included a shiny new oil filter to reduce the hurt factor somewhat.

The filters are quite small, they're BMW "K" series motorcycle filters so should be available world wide for the next 50 years. As you can see I've made special center spigots so you can tighten the adapter to the engine block with a 7/8" socket, and when you spin the filter off the adapter, all that's gonna come off is the filter.

Take a look at the pics and contact me if you'd like one, I'm gonna take the cooler off my K1 as winter slowly draws nearer, so I'll use one, but if there's enough interest out there I'll make another batch. Geez, I gotta start cleaning my garage, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. ;D
