Fitting new(used) bars and could use some pointers...
« on: July 11, 2008, 10:42:51 AM »
I have a '72-350four to which a set of "high" bars was installed since original.  I'm doing a general refurbishing of the bike and have some nice stock (lower) bars to replace those currently fitted.

Question= Which is the advised approach to deal with the wiring and controls; is there a reccomended approach? Should I get into the headlight bucket, disconnect the individual pieces and fish that end or should i disconnect at the controls and go the other way.

Anyone had to deal wuith this before?

I'm not an expert or anything near but I am changing the bars on my bike right now and in my personal opinion it is way easier to disconnect from the headlight. I recently did both and I think if I had to shorten the wires I would pull the extra wire through the headlight cut down to size and solder the wire connectors back on and then heat shrink. If you don't solder at least heat shrink. While your in the headlight, cleaning your connections with a scotchbrite or some sandpaper wouldn't hurt.

As far as the rest goes I have heard of people shortening there clutch cable for cafe bars so I would imagine you could do the same to your chopper bar cables and you can probably do the same to the throttle cables. I decided to just save myself the trouble and buy new shorter cables. I hope this helps.
An expert will probably come in and correct me now

i agree with the wire shortening technique,as far as the cables are concerned, get with motion pro and buy new ones from them.
