Tightening cam sprocket
« on: April 08, 2008, 11:55:43 AM »
What is the best way to hold the cam in place in order to torque the cam sprocket blots?

Thanks

With your hand?   The bolts only require a bit more than hand tightening before the cam is secure enough to hold its relation to piston travel. I will usually just snug one bolt up with a wrench while holding cam in place, then you can spin the engine and torque both bolts without upsetting cam timing. This is when using a slotted sprocket.

If you're using the stock sprocket then there is no need to hold anything ;)

I've already got them hand tight, I mean when actually torquing them down to 12-14, do you just put the engine in gear? Just wanted to make sure I wouldn't damage anything by doing that.

my torque wrench range is 0 - 100lb/ft, so it's not that accurate in the range for those small bolts, especially since i planned on using loctite.

i cleaned the sprocket threaded holes, cleaned the bolts, installed the cam sprocket on the cam, and installed both bolts.  i used service-removable loctite, and just carefully snugged them up.  i may have put a wrench on the cam end nut so the sprocket wouldn't turn (i previously loctite'd that nut).

Gotcha ;)  A hand on top of the chain and sprocket oughta be enough, or a wrench on the crank end(alternator side) or cam end as shoeman suggests

I haven't been able to fit a socket and torque wrench in that small area so I use a wrench and tighten by feel.
