Trading CB750 Comstar for Spoked wheels
« on: April 27, 2005, 06:53:46 PM »
I have the parts for a dual disc swap for my CB550 - the forks, triples, wheels, calipers, and disks from a 78 CB750 Supersport. The wheels are Comstars. I like the spokes better than the Comstars, so I thought that I could just get a spoked wheel from a CB750 and use that. However, looking at pictures of 750 spoked wheels, I see that the discs are attached to the hub with 6 bolts, whereas the parts that I have use 5 bolts to secure the discs to the hub.

Are there spoked CB750 (or any compatible) wheels that use the 5 bolt pattern?

Thanks,
Brian

sorry mate, pretty sure all the cb750 spoked wheels are 6 bolt disc configuration, the comstars had the 5 bolt.....anyone else?

I am looking to do this also. I have a 76 550 ..after chopping it, the bike set too low...so I put a later model 750 fork with dual disc and comstar rim on it... I miss my spoke front tire.  I am going to try to change the fork lowers to use the 750 tubes and 550 lowers and tire. Not sure if they will match though.

Brian-

The first generation GL1000s used a dual disc setup with spoked wheels.  The hub is pretty much the same as a 750 part however the speedo drive assembly and other misc parts are a bit different.  These wheels also come stock with alloy rather than steel DID rims which are pretty nice.  This said, it is doubtful that the rotors on the GL wheel would line up correctly with the CB750 f2/f3 calipers.  They could perhaps be shimmed to align.  Overall for the classic spoke/period look and nicely performing dual disc brakes your best bet is to install an entire GL1000 front end.  The tripple tree fits the 750s head with no real problems although there is offten a bit of work to adapt your guage mount bracket and perhaps a bit of padding on the steering stops.  This gives you thicker forks, the alloyed DID rim spoked wheel, and f2/F3 style trailing calipers.  This conversion brakes alot better than adding a second stock 750 style disc/caliper.  A modern setup would of course brake a good bit better.  Hope this helps

Thanks eurban...

I already have the entire front and rear from the CB750. I'll probably just go that route and do the disk conversion on the rear as well. It's not even summer and I already have winter projects lined up :)
