Had a close call the other weekend.
I was staying at my sisters place to babysit because she went to visit my brother in Vienna.
We went and got my boyfriends new old bike and returned late in the evening. Everything was fine then. My daily rider a Honda VFR750F was sitting in the driveway. I put the brake disk lock on and left it next to my mums car I had burrowed for the 700km drive. The 1978 suzuki GS750 which looks kind of ratty was parked behind it.
After this long drive we were a bit tired and the youngest dog (both of them are sheperds) was bugging us so we finally gave in and took them for a walk.
Getting back from this we watched a movie until about 02.00AM and went to bed.
All of a sudden the youngest one barks a little but I thought he was seeing things... I did take him downstairs and outside but nothing was to be seen.

Next morning we tried to start the GS which failed at first but we did get it going after pushstarting it down the street (twice ::)) But finally my boyfriend drove it round the block and I ran back to put my gear on and jump on the VFR.

When I went to take the lock off I found I had no keyhole left... :o :o :o The cylinder was lying on the ground with drill markings all over!!

I started swearing but then realised I should be happy :-[. At home I normally never put the lock on because it's inside an enclosed courtyard, but something made me do it there. The dog definitely did not see ghosts :P and luckily I didn't just dismiss the barks and put the lights on going down the steps and outside the house.
But now I couldn't go anywhere.... The lock was still on. Luckily the nice neighbour had an angle grinder. Took quite some effort to get throught that luck. I already have a new one... ;D ;D

It just pisses me off that these f@cks can't keep their hands of of somebody else's PROPERTY! >:(

Sorry just needed to vent!

I tried to change my oil Saturday only to find that all my tools had been stolen from the garage.  I feel your pain.

Had a bunch of tools stolen from my garage almost two years ago.  I was really pissed (still am), but I also felt really fortunate that they didn't even touch any of the bikes.

Glad you had it locked up! :)

At least it all worked out OK.  Tough to trust strangers after that kind of experience though.

Last week I finally got my Colt 9mm Commander back from the Chicago police dept. It was stolen back in 1985 along with 8 other guns, camera, micro wave, coffee maker, and (2) leather jackets, (1 mc jacket was brand new - never even wore it0. So far I've gotten back 2 pistols in 23 years. They tried to get in the garage but I had an all steel service door with a dead bolt. They used a pipe wrench but couldn't get in. My new honda 650 noghthawk was in there, but it was chained to the floor with a 1/2" cable to an eye I had put in when we poured the floor. Yea, I was really pissed.

Glad to hear the bike was still there!  Perhaps the would-be thief heard the dog bark and took off.  That's why I don't like cats  ;)

I'm glad it all turned out OK.  Big city living :P

Small Island living can be a pain sometimes, but I leave the keys in my cars, trucks, bikes and never lock the doors to the house when I'm out or when we go to bed.
None of my bikes would ever get off this rock with the ferry sentries..

When crack heads get $20.00 together they don't buy a ferry ticket ;D

.............time for a camera in your drive perhaps Ingrid :-\

120lb male German Shepherd might help. Just open the door and let him go!! They get pissed if someone is messing with the master's stuff. If that doesn't work get your 9mm out. Just don't shoot the dog......

Sooo, Ingrid cannot really do that. 1st, Europe IS different in that respect, that we don't have "8 guns stolen" as we don't have guns, and everybody lives with that happily.
2nd - big, aggressiev dog running loose around a property is just asking for trouble - you ARE after all responsible for ALL that a dog will do.

So it's not as black & white as we wish. I reckon, that this is just the flavour of teh big city living. I live in a village (liek city suburbia) and no problems at all..... But then, my kids have the school further away, and they don't have that many kids in teh neighbourhood to play with...

Still - that must have been bunch of lousy amateurs. I'm hearing that in UK it's getting really tight with the bikes, especially teh crotch-rocket type. New fashion, perhaps?

I agree with installing a camera.

I recently put one up with a motion sensor light as well.
The camera records 24/7, but the light only comes on with motion.

And in the best interests, you might want to try to out do the camera/lights as well.
If you can slowly sneak up on it without the lights coming on, so can a thief.
hugging walls is a common practice, as well as using vehicles to block the motion detector from detecting movement. The only foolproof way to get around a motion sensor i have ever heard about is shooting it out with a bb gun or a wrist rocket.(either the lights themselves or the motion detecting unit)
If the lights don't come on the camera will at best give you grainy video that is basically useless.

Don't forget to post a sign stating there is security on the premises on the outside perimeter(fence, edge of yard etc.).
Inexperienced/unskilled thiefs will look at it, and pass on your house looking for easier prey.

IF they either know you have something valuable, or see it in plain sight thats another story though.
VERY few burglars/thieves actually case a house unless they know you are loaded, or are intending on hitting the entire neighborhood.

NEVER put the camera where it can be easily spotted.
It will more than likely get shot out/beaten/spray painted by a determined thief.
Best bet IMO is a fake camera in plain view.
With real one(s) with a good view of the area near the fake camera.

And seriously, most thieves will skip on houses simply with a little placard stating there is security on the premises.

Mine states:
"Brinks Security system installed"

And the other card reads:
"The lights aren't to scare you off,
They are there to improve my aim"

And the NRA stickers on the vehicles might help as well.

Well if these people would have remained and given me trouble I wouldn't have tried to keep the dogs back althought one was still asleep upstairs as was my boyfriend  ::).
Them f@cks would not have liked that because my sister actually does police dog training with these "puppies"..... ;D ;D
However they had left before I could try and maybe that was for the best...
