Gold 'Patina' or staining on carb parts...
« on: April 08, 2008, 01:40:58 AM »
The pieces in my carbs have a gold 'Patina'  is this some sort of protective plating or is it oxidization from the fuel etc. on the parts that I can polish off?

They're K5 Keihin's

Thanks.

Do you mean "in" the carbs?
In which case it is anodised or brass pieces, such as jets, brass, or float
arms anodized.  If outside, the control arms are anodised steel while
the bodies are pot metal aluminum.  If they are goldish it's probably
fuel or oil.

Mine had too. It cleans but you need a little elbow grease. I think it's yellowing of the clearcoat due to the gas, and if there is no clearcoat in the bowls, then just dried gas.

If in doubt, get them ultrasonically cleaned - if it's meant ot be on there it'll stay if it's clearcoat yellowed by gas or other gas staining it'll come off....

I know that jewelry gets cleaned that way sometimes, never heard of cleaning carbs that way...sounds like a good idea! Can it be done at home? If not, can you recommend a service or website for more info?

I'm using a dremel tool with a soft sponge like head you can get at Lowes or Sears hardware.
And yes, I do mean the jets and the "Choke door" as well as the choke lever inside the carb housing, all that 'stuff.'
