How the heck does that thing come out.  I can seem to get it out for the life of me.

Have you removed the neutral switch from the underside of the engine? It sits in a recess in the drum and would prevent removal, I think.  It's been some months since I did mine so memory is hazy, but heres a parts diagram that might help
