Hasty ebay mistake?
« on: April 09, 2008, 10:25:00 PM »
So yesterday I came upon an ebay auction with literally one minute left. The item: a dual disc setup for a '78 CB750F (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching&viewitem=&item=230238305029&_trksid=p3907.m32). I apologize in advance if I beat any of you out of this auction, especially since I don't even know if I can use the parts. The auction--for a pair of calipers, worn out lines (gonna go stainless anyway), t-junction, and MC with lever--seemed like the answer to all my dual-disc conversion prayers, so I got aggressive with the bidding and won it. Thing is, I have a 550, and I have a sinking feeling I'm not going to be able to make the setup work. I checked the FAQ, and it doesn't say anything about using parts from a '78 750F. I figure if it was plug-n-play, that would be listed.

So my question is, will this setup work on my '75 550F? What mods would I need to do to adapt it? And could I use rotors from an early-model 750 that has the six-bolt pattern like my wheel? Or did I just screw up and drop $140 on a setup that won't work for me without replacing my wheel and forks?

Thanks.
J

Yeah mate, you're screwed. Worse than that, a couple of days prior a pair of F2 calipers and a MC went for under 30 bucks. That seller must think he hit paydirt!

Now I don't have access to EBay from my Defence Department computer, but did you get the whole front end with forks, triples front wheel, etc? (I imagine you did for 140 bucks?)

If you did you'll be able to make it work, no problemo. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Now you got to decide is 1 bad feedback worth $140???  Heck, I would just buy it and then relist it.  I think there were 18 bids on it.  You should be able to recoop some of your spending.

i'd apologize to the seller, and say that you misread the years and the parts wont work.  They do have a neutral seller rating now, and maybe he'd take $10 to relist it and give you positive feedback.

You had a 3 day window. maybe 2 left now. Explain to the seller or underbidder that you cannot use them, and see if underbidder want them.. but be prepared to drop price a bit..or they will just think shilling.

At this point losing 2 or 30 bucks is not so bad, you would loose that anyway, getting them shipped to you & reselling.. probably at a lower price.

Just my 2cents.. at this point they are your and you have to pay.

Contact seller... explain how they won't fit as intended.. seller can send 'second chance offer' to 2nd place and get 'final value fee credit' for the reduced selling price. grovel some... maybe even beg.

I think you are doing the right thing. Pay him, get the parts and relist. Part of building is getting the wrong parts from time to time.

I'd offer to pay the difference between your bid and what he might be able to get from the second chance offer.  Worst that can happen is that he makes you stick to it, but most people are pretty understanding.  Make it worth his while.  You might even ask him to relist it "for you" and you can pay the difference between what he ends up selling it for and what you bid.  You might get a bit screwed, but you save all the shipping and hassle of doing it yourself.

That is a really good idea. Seller still sells and you save shipping it around.

The same seller has listed the F2 forks etc, so why not buy them and do a front end swap? If you don't like Comstar wheels use a GL1000 front wheel and discs, and the improvement over what you're got new will be stunning! Cheers, Terry. ;D
