old school WWII looking motorcycle helmet??
« on: April 11, 2008, 08:47:03 AM »
when i first showed my bike to a friend he said it looked like one of the little Nazi bikes like in the indiana jones movies. so i was wondering if there were and old school looking WWII helmets. nothing authentic of course just someting that might "look" the part. i dont really like open faced helmets but something diferent looking would be fun
But thence came the Great Schism, when the two like tribes diverged, and the Bobbers did take the Road to Cruiserdom and the Cafe Racers did ride to Sportbikedom and they did pollute the lands along their paths with their abominable spawn of Choppers, Stuntaz and like manner of unholy douchebaggery

In the 30s and 40s, it was regular infantry helmets- to protect against bullets, not crashes.  Racers either wore cotton caps or leather football helmets.

Don't do it!!! Think of your chin, which is the first thing to hit the ground in one third of all motorcycle accidents.

i have a cb550 with clip-ons. so it doesnt really look like it to me but my friend is a cruiser guy and never really seen a cafe kinda bike before. and i have a full face helmet that i use. was gonna look for an open face helmet for around the neghberhood. i usually drive my bike to work-out. i dont cross any major streets. just some two lane roads and its about 3 or 4 minutes. this would be really that only time i would use it. i wouldnt wear an open face helmet when riding anywere else. its more for a gag really but who knows

Well, you're more likely to get creamed with the kind of riding you're talking about than on the freeway.

That said- I wear a Davida in the summer.  Not cheap, but I love it.

I've seen a couple of guys wearing a black pudding-bowl type of helmet with a grey stripe around the bottom edge.  I'd love to find out where they came from.

Maybe something a little earlier than WWII.
From a Prussian conflict possibly.

I've got a german military style helmet that is supposed to be covered in leather and DOT approved.  The cover seems a bit too thin to be real leather, at least of any quality, but looks the part.  You can find one here, http://helmetsplace.com/pro1067023.html.  I personally didn't like it because it caught the wind and I had to wear goggles with it.  I also have a skinny head and felt it made me look a bit like a penis.  I'd sell it cheap if your interested since I just bought a full face ICON.  Send me a PM if interested and we'll talk price.

I still remember at a biker hang-out, a guy on a harley parks his bike wearng a German helmet.  An old guy says to him as he's walking up the stairs, "The last time I saw one of those helmets was in my crosshairs."   I have a feeling the guy didn't "get it".

I always pause to reflect on the irony of a cruiser with several American flags waving and the rider is wearing one of those helmets.  Kind of sad, really.

So true, UE...  A German helmet really only looks appropriate on one of those geeks who ride the /2 beemers  ;D

And even then I question the appropriateness.

My Dad wore a real one..for a few years..

Anyway, back to wearing them riding..appropriate or not.. I think they were first worn for shock value.. it would have been in the sixties and after 2 decades the war was a lot fresher on a lot of peoples minds.

I hate those pretentious geek nerd wannabes.  They all deserve serial wedgies by a line of Jr High cheerleaders in a public place.

Hmmm... OK, maybe college age is better.  You Know- over 18.
That would teach me them a lesson!

Back in the bad old days there were a lot of coal skuttle helmets around mostly 1%'s and the vets would growl a lot about nazi's never could see one my self but one of my bosses had an approved Bowler that he would use on his old Enfield always thought it was kind of cool.
