Considering a move to California
« on: April 11, 2008, 08:54:16 PM »
Greetings All,

I've been seriously contemplating making a move to Southern California and just wanted to see if I could learn a bit before making the leap.

(I lived in San Diego 20 years ago and it seems much has changed since then.)

My first question is, what kind of problems would I run into registering my CBs in California?
Would emissions be an issue?

Is there anyone who has some advice on finding housing in Southern California? Is there anyone who can recommend good websites or contacts? I'm not in fully in favor of renting, but may need to for 6 months to a year.

I'm also job searching and have a few prospects, but would like to find more opportunities in SoCal.   My experience is in Electronics Testing/ Test Engineering / Quality Engineering. Can anyone recommend places where I can search for employment other than the likes of  monster dot com?

Thanks and Best Regards,
DiscoEd

Right now the SoCal housing market is a buyer's market.  Many bank owned homes or desperate sellers with "take over payments", "no down, no closing costs", etc.  Houses that sold for $500,000 2 years ago ar now going for $250,000 - $300,000.  As far as job search goes, try Career Builders and Yahoo Hot Jobs.  Do you do hardware or software QA?  My wifes company Kofax might be looking.

Tramp,

Do you mean that good pay is hard to find in the defense industry or in SoCal in general?

Good deals on homes by former cliffs and near former forests.  Get something on wheels so you can be flexible during emergencies.  BRING CASH.

Fing companies and send requests for info.  Send a resume and be pro=active.  Learn words like pro-active.  Learn to surf BEFORE buying a board.  Look farther up North like around Mountain View and San Jose- maybe even San Francisco.

And if you move to somewhere near the Ortega Highway, you will have found an outstanding road to ride your bikes on. Between San Juan Capistrano and Elsinore. One AWESOME stretch of road. 8) 8) 8)

Uncle Ernie,

Just curious about what your reasoning is for looking up north? Jobs? Housing?

Jobs.  I can't remember what you said you were going to do, but most jobs in SoCal are service related or lawyers.  On the other hand, central Cal is possibly the highest real estate in the country.  Better to get offers that take the "sink or swim" approach- maybe?  Do company research and arrange "informational interviews" where you ask about the business, get referrals, etc.

No disrespect to CB'ers living there, but can't you find somewhere else to move besides
the "left coast"?
Sorry, I just couldn't help that jab. ;D

I lived in SF for 25 years.  I'd be there today if I wasn't such a loser.
I never got over being a hippy.

On the other hand- how many people in SF have a brick house with a TWO CAR GARAGE all to themselves.

For the past two weeks I've been really busy with work. Now I've got some free time and can start working on updating my resume. I'll start farming it out and see how it goes.

I'm still not certain about what area I'd really like to live in. I'm in Modesto right now and have been looking around a bit. This weekend I'll be in San diego. I've been having a really hard time getting a feel for what a "good" price is for a three bedroom two bath house out here. There is really much more variance in price compared to what is typical in the north east.

Security is also a concern. Some areas that I've been in I can tell that its not a secure place for my family. Other areas seem more secure and still other areas seem difficult to assess.

If you're looking for a job, check into Vandenberg AFB.  There's a lot of work to be had out here in the Comm career field.  The area is spectacular, nice weather year-round, and an absolute rider's dream.  Housing in Santa Maria and Lompoc is fairly affordable.  Drop me a line and I can probably hook you up with some contacts if you're interested.

I live in Dana Point, it's in south Orange County on the SD border and my friend is looking for a 3 bed room. it seems like walking distance to the beach is around 600k to 1mil. 10 minuets inland you can get a 3 bed house with yard for about the same. you should check out Orange County.
