Do aftermarket kickstands exist?
« on: April 10, 2008, 12:04:11 PM »
One of the genius previous owners of my 77 750K decided it would be a good idea to not only take off the kickstand, but grind off the mounting tab from the frame.

So now I have a centerstand and some boogery welds and a little chunk of metal where the kickstand mounting tab used to be.

Needless to say this is very obnoxious.  Is there any sort of aftermarket kickstand that can mount to the frame or anything like that?

Sure, look at Harley kickstands, so long as you're willing to weld it on.

Use this as an excuse to go pick up a shiny new mig welder :)

British makers used to do "bolt on" sidestands which invariably bolted off and the paint people made a fortune re-doing all the fell over tanks etc
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

mines also been cut off but i have a spare, i wouldnt MIG weld it on, id make sure its TIG'd for strengh.

I was thinking about doing away with the centre and just having the side? i was worried about catching the centre stand on left handers, as ive read a few times its possible to catch it?

Moreover, why would you not just unbolt the sidestand if you hate it that much?  These are the things that boggle my mind.

Most of the mounting brackets stick out far enough to ground out and lift either front or rear wheel, 500 four is particularly bad IMHO, probably why they moved mounting on 550F (CB500F hangs off front of frame)
Its not generally a problem for road use but if you fit better tyres and/or suspension it can get pretty serious.

My frame where the sidestand had been cut off is about 4 3/4 inch off the ground, And I can still slide the forks up another inch or two for the drags :o.. so no ..I could not ride it with it there.

Early bikes did not have feeler balls on the pegs, some like having the c-stand hit as a warning + be able to lube chain and remove wheel easily.

To whoever thought it has to be tigged on, are you going to reweld the whole frame?

To answer, yes bolt ons did exist, but I think they were longer (for a narrower Brit frame) and still needed to be welded to prevent moving.

Fix the old one.

Hey 1080 has 2 on his bike, right and left :o.. maybe get one from him..

If you need a new one, I cut one off of my 550 frame for the reasons above and I may be able to locate it; I changed to a yoshi exhaust, and the hang down protrusion on the 550 kickstand is horrific looking.  I just welded on some new tabs to hold the kickstand up inside the frame rails below the engine.  Can't even really see a kickstand unless you really look for it.

Woah, that's a great idea.  I'd end up using the right-side one all the time, just to be different  :D

Never saw a clamp on stand,.. Doubt if that would work unless it had some fancy bracketry to stabilize it and not just friction clamping?

If you are refering to my old kickstand, let me make sure that I can find it.  If I do it is yours if you pay the shipping.
If and when I do find it, (I will look tonight), I will take some pics and post em up.

I didn't forget about the kickstand.  I did find it and snap a pic and will post it as soon as I find the camera link cables.  However, the kickstand no longer has the spring, but I bet they are probably not too hard to find.
