So far...


I have replaced(and patched/spliced and re-wired) my wiring harness and most of the electrical bits.

Went a bit easier then I had feared.
Just a good check over and a battery is all that blocks me from seeing if this new wiring harness will even get the motor to turn over.

Wheres the fingers crossed emoticon?



I have gone back to a 4-2 exhaust as well.
Going to tidy up a few things I noticed lately.
I NEED a bracket for the oil cooler, might as well weld it to the fairing bracket.

The modified 750 exhaust collars had to come off, as well as the 4-1.
The fins stuck out farther than the stockers, and rubbed the fairing mount.
No problems there now.

Just not too sure how the change from a 4-1 to a 4-2 will have with my engine/carb/airfilter/modified air cover......
Not too noticeable I would imagine.

So, almost back to something the Japanese manufacturers might recognise as their handiwork then Soos! ;D

Good news so far.
She cranks over, but no spark yet.
??


Well one thing at a time.
So the dead parts list contains.....
1 starter
2 stators
1 rotor
right hand control
an entire wiring harness
3 starter solenoids


And I haven't even begun to sort out the  spark problem yet.





Oh, the day after thanksgiving is just stupid to go out into I am now convinced.
never again.

Myself REALLY HATING CROWDED areas......

Having to wait in a HERD of people, no kidding they were being herded by the "event staffers".
For no less than 3 hours, ONLY to find out i'm 5 people past the point in the line I was in to get a ticket for the item I was waiting in line for.
THEN the traffic.....

Never again.
Black friday they call it. With just cause IMO.

Couldn't be a worse public activity to participate in.
I would rather pierce the my chest with a bone and be suspended in midair for 3 days first.

(just noticed bunghole didn't get red flagged by the spell checker.... when did beavis and butthead get to enter new words into the language :) )

Well anyways back to something more sane......

I FINALLY got a runner..... until I blew my one and only damned main fuse.
That one lasted me quite a while!
I noticed that this 4-2 exhaust system I picked up is drilled on the end of the muffler.
Three 3/8'ish holes in pattern near the baffle rivets.




Sounds good.




Gotta wake up early


It's the slow season, and I just worked nearly 70 hours in the past week(and I had yesterday off!)

Well, I found a replacement 30A main fuse... for now.
Who knows I might keep it hooked up if it works out well.

I went to the local auto parts store, and grabbed a single fuse holder(with 2 wires poking out to attach to whatever you need it to) and 6 30 A fuses.
Automotive type, but it should( ??? ) work.


She runs well, but I still seem to be blowing the fuse when I get the motor over 6k RPM. ??

Everything I can test I have(electrically) so far.
No defunct electrical bits, or broken wires I can find.
I am going to have do some searching....
Gotta luv the search function!!!

Sounds like you might be creating too much charge mate, has your battery boiled dry yet?
I'd test at the battery as you increase the revs, maybe the fuse is popping as the charge rate gets too high, 15volts is about max for our 650 systems.

I tested the V at the battery at diff. rev's, and I guess that V. reg. was faulty.
Put my last "spare" one of those on, and it tops out at 14.7 volts.


No more blow outs of the fuses either.
The faulty ground wire didn't help either.

This wiring harness is FUBAR in general though.
about 6 or 7 slpices, a few connectors had to be replaced, still needs re-wrapped too.
Well, next I think I am going to re-cover the seat and put the fairing back on.


Oh, I managed to get the fairing mount low enough to cradle the oil cooler MUCH better.
Even a tab that is on the fairing mount just happens to be in the perfect position to mount the oil cooler to it.




I can tell I need a carb synch though.
Either that or my timing is WAY too retarded for a smooth idle.
My money is on the synch though.

If you have found your camera yet (or your wife has let you borrow it back) a few piccies would be good, my imagination aint what it used to be. ;)

I think I have a seatpan that might lend itself well to suck a seat.
Might have to look into getting that plastic welder again.




I think I might re-jet as well.
A tad richer(by the plug color) and all 4 carbs with the same mainjets.


These carbs/bike/piston of my bike brought up quite the conversation at the local parts counter I ordered my jets at.

Ahh....
The seat re-covering went well.
Looks TONS better.

Have mounted the oil cooler to the fairing mount, so no more bunjee cords holding it in place... :)
The fairing mount frame had to be scooted down a bit, might NEED a taller winshield now.
Last year it did pretty good at highway speeds., but still buffeted the top of my helmet a bit.


Need to look up home made carb manometer systems.

I swear the carbs need synced.

for a poor mans carb sync . 4 5mm clear tubes tied to a board 2 meters high, for restrictors the slow idle jets out of a spare set of carbs and to connect to the carb manifolds the main jets out of the same set. I stuck the free bottom ends of the tubes in a bottle half filled with engine oil and sealed it with plasticine. works like a charm

It's been a while, and have done a bit more.


Fairing wiring is cleaner now.
Installed and timed the 550 cam in my 650.
Found that the cam retarded all the way makes it nearly 7 degrees off, but going the other way the cam shows is advanced about 4 degrees.
Must be cam chain stretch. I know I milled those slots to be pretty much +/- 5 degrees.

It seems to have little/no power under 6-7k(i'm guessing, I have no 550 tach) with the cam 4-5 degrees retarded. any more that that and I can't get it to start.

All the way advanced, the cam is at 4 degrees advanced, and it seems to  have more low end grunt.
I do most of my commuting at 6-7k anyways, it will do for now.
The other benefit : It starts easier now.



Oh, last time I went to torque down the rocker arm assemble bolts, I stripped a hole out on the head :(
But since it was on the edge of the head, I decided to tape the head off and helicoil the hole.
Ended up doing 2 holes, as I found another on the edge of usable as well.
I'm happy :)

The seat cover looks good, but I need to buff out the spots of something that is on it though.
Sorry to see my tach not being used though.

That brings me to another mod lately as well.
I grooved the cam tach cable plug I had made, and now it seals MUCH better!!.
All it did before was weep, but now not a drop comes out!


I had time today to work on my bike due to my works power being out this morning.
Went home at 5:15 after waiting a hour and a half.
All I need to do now(as far as I can remember) is replace/repair my pressure switch for my front brakes to get everything up to snuff IMO.

Well, as I have been into my motor about 5 times in the past week, I've decided to clean up the visible flashing on my motor.

I had painted the juggs and head when I did my bore and port job, and I filed/sanded the edges to give it a nice accent to the paintjob.

It actually made the flashing/casting flaws show up SOO much more.



Ahhhh... I had started this once, and gave up due to the time it is going to need.

I could re-paint the motor, and leave it all black(hiding the flashing better)
OR fix the flashing spots, repaint and re-sand the edges to give the paint job an accent with those aluminum striped and the rest being black.


I figure why not, it's still dumping snow now and then.
I might not do it all, but from a passerby, it should look good.
