Anyone know if Hondaman ever hooked us up with something to replace the stock igniters?

Someone with a 650 here in Denver area was supposed to come by so I could try my ignition out with his bike. He's never showed up, yet...  :(  Maybe one of these weekends?

I think it will work, but I might need to add a diode to the input circuit to guarantee longevity (they have a 5-year warranty, want to make sure it beats that!).

If anyone else on this thread has a 650 with the electronics, and can come by for the test, I'd like to see you....  ???
Yes it was me.  Seems our scedule never agreed.   I have been to a couple sohc4/Denver rusted nuts meets kinda close to your place.

Holly heck, stock! surely not one for the missus to ride is it?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Hey Soos,

A few people recommended me over to you, I just picked up a 79 cb650 a month or so ago, and have been spending as much time as I can on it to get it up and going (here is my thread: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=56725.0 ) Anyway, short story long, I have a chance to pick up a complete parts bike minus the carbs, the only problem is its a 1981 cb650. I don't want it if I can only use the engine and other smaller parts, I really would like to be able to use the gauges, tank, fenders, etc... I have done some research and I can't really seem to find out exactly what parts are compatible  between the two. Any help in this area would be very helpful.

Ofered it, and she declined.
I guess I will have something to compare my modified '79 to :)

The seat height is a good 2 inches shorter on my modified cb650... :)



And dhinch279 I'll check out your thread.
Been missing most of the new threads due to busy work (10-12 hour days) 6-7 days a week.
Today was my 13th day in a row.....
However my next check will be nice.

I'm editing the pics now... next post....

Again I warn those with weak eyes....'tis fugly.
Mind you my MPG went up 3mpg on the 100 miles of commuting today.
(with REALLY windy conditions in the afternoon)
The last time rode(without fairing) with similar winds 38mpg.

On normal days I would average 41-43 without the fairing with no abnormal winds.
I'm interested in what I can get with this thing though.....


I do get more exhaust noise reflected back at me though.
 ;D
Another thing is the front end feels "planted" there.....
Like the airforce is putting more downward force on the front tire.
It also stabilized a LOT of the air gusts.
This is the best fairing I have ran so far though.
The little plastic removable one I ran for a bit was .... ok.

the one on my father in-laws 550maxim (from a KZ1000) just feels WAY too big for the size of his bike.
This one is a vetter Vindicator with a frame kit for a cb550......
Fits like a freiking glove.

Ok, I gotta bend the hard oil lines to the oil cooler to push it up about another inch to properly fit with this in place.....
But it doesn't interfere with the fender(and I bottomed the suspension on one really bad highway bump).

here you go... fugly in one afternoon 101.





Take one thrown together pile of mods on a '79 cb650 frame, and throw a fairing and the wrong grab bar.
Aldo a funky light mounting system....
But it works.


It also raised my riding temp a good 10-15 degrees.....
WHEW.
with full leather(boots to neck) minus hands with a full face helmut....
then throw in the fairing with it's air pocket behind it......


In the fall I will enjoy this bike.
I am thinking of getting my other '79 running and using it for a summer rider, and this thing for a winter beater....
It's frame is powdercoated, and should last a long time even in a salted road environment.

well... um... at least it works, right?

There's nothing so ugly it can't be saved with matte black paint and maybe mad max style silver rivets or something- something that says "I'm primitive but effective and meant to be this way, so F.U." :D

I'm a big fan of functionality, though.  I really can't fault you for using the fairing.  You see the huge windshield on my bike...

Yes it all works.

Ok I need to put the horn back on, but it is a nice clean install.




Oh, on a side note...
Yet another overbore option.
I went ahead and bought a set of KZ650 pistons.
So far, just by eye, they look to be REALLY good overbore options.
They are 62mm.

I know paulages is running, or will be soon, his 64mm 718(?)cc cb550/650 hybrid.

I am pretty sure I can get the 65mm I got to work, and am figuring out what can be done with the 66mm kz750 pistons.(763cc :) )

I'm thinking this winter I will bore my last untouched cb650 block and take it to work to rough bore it out near 62mm.
I'm thinking I may even try using their hone to hone it out.
Might have to buy some fine stones, or a ball hone or something....


This would kick ass for a under $50 overbore.

Oh, and the fairing frame(if I didn't mention before) is for a cb550.
DROPPED RIGHT IN.
Even has a leather bag to stuff the wiring connectors that were in the headlight bucket.\
Cleanest install. The PO did me a favor and used the bullet style connectors, and no real wiring hackjob was done.



Who knows I might sell this one eventually. After I replace the bits I stole from this bike onto my stocker cb650 to complete it as much as possible.

Well MPG has improved drastically.


On windy days doing uhummmm... the speed limit... yeah.... I get about 43mpg(Vs. 38-40 I got without the fairing on badly windy days)

On good days(no wind, and I get off in time to actually do the speed limit and make it on time) I have been averaging 47-51mpg.
thats about 8-10mpg better.


The lack of wind buffeting my chest helps on a hour(48-49 miles) ride both ways to and from work.



Nice for long distances I would imagine....
Good for a commuter... I wonder what MPG I could pull with the stocker carbs......
I got 60ish once with a smaller plastic fairing.

I've seen a lot of vetter faired bikes on KSL lately guess I'll have to pinch my pennies and pick one up. I like the faired look, very period correct IMO, I just don't want it for my current ride :D And if it improves mpg all the better!

Soos, you incredibly overworked fool, are you ever gonna come get those pegs? I finally located them, haha, I put them back on the parts bike. Gotta stop putting things where they go, it confuses me  :D

Yikkes a white fairing, add some blue and red lights and you can probably do whatever speed you want to on the freeway Soos, people will even get out of your way, give way at intersections (even when they don't have to! ;D) and you have little fear of being hit by tintops as they "WILL" see you I promise! ;D

Hush, this is UT not NZ. We are rated as one of the worst states to drive in, in the US. People see red and blue lights and they get IN the way, not out. I think it must be something in the water  ;)

I have thought of it...

As it is I pretty much ride as I like in the morning.
:)


The speedo odometer quits counting when the speedo needle hits the peg past the 80mph mark.



MPG going around 45-55 now.
55mpg was on the ONE day I actually rode to and from work doing 55 the whole way.
At about 48mpg....that is a fairly normal MPG lately.
(I cleaned my K&N air filter lately :) )
A windy day drops it to 45'ish, a nice backwind day, the 51+ range(doing 75'ish mph).



And yes, Utah has the worst drivers.
The  ONE real problem I see is they cannot merge without slowing 30-40mph under the speed limit.
No matter what the speed limit is.

And when one person hits the brakes, so does EVERYONE else......
I sit pretty high(compared to a compact car) and can see the "slinky" effect EVERY DAY in the evening.
I'm glad I ride to work early in the morning, and there is barely any traffic on the way to work.






Denver..... YOU BETTER be doing 60 MINimum when entering the highway, they expect you know how to drive, use turn signals, and merge with traffic.....

Alaska, WAY more courteous than anywhere else I have drove.



I gotta go to work at 4:am..... so i'm off to bed.
I gotta do my valve clearances this weekend....(or my next day off)
Tighten my chain too.... I'm either lucky and got a GOOD cheap chain, or I keep everything aligned close enough, because I've logged 16,000+ miles this year so far. and about 20-25k on the chain in total.
(thought it was 20,000, but not quite... wait a few weeks)
This chain has only needed adjusted about every 2000 to 3000 miles.
And then not a whole lot.

Well....




I blame my dyna2000 unit for this recent failure of electrical bits.



Ever since I had the dyna blow up on me, it seems that I have had to charge my battery WAY too often.
Like weekly (again :( ) Thought I had fixed that....



But today on the way back, I was REALLY lucky to get up to 35 after a few miles on the way home.



Well long story short, The voltage reg/rec tested OK(changed it anyway), the Rotor was SHOT, and the stator was pretty much fried as well.
Changed those parts..... HOPEFULLY it fixed all the problems lately.
Ie. - low MPG(last week it has ben in the upper 30's, low 40's), hesitation at high RPM, and the weekly(daily at times) charging.

I seriously think it stemmed from when the dyna2000 unit failed(or was the failing charging system the cause of the dyna failure??)


Anywhoo, I changed the rotor and the stator(rotor was COMPLETELY shot!!).
Thought that was the best choice.


The insulation was nearly black(or a DEEP black/red) color.
When I popped off the rotor, I saw a lot of (??) dust coming off. It looked almost like rust.
Might have been the insulation, not sure.


Now I changed all that(and the voltage reg/rec), it keeps wanting to fry the main fuse when I hit the starter button.
BUT I can push start it, and it's fine(or seems so)
I think I may need to re-build/replace my starter, possibly the starter solenoid as well.




At least it's near the end of riding season.
Been thinking of taking the rotor to a bike junkyard, and looking for more modern bikes that have a charging system that might fit(even if it needs cut to fit properly), and upgrading the charging system.






Anyone know of a rotor(besides the DOHC 750/900/1100's) that use a rotor with the same(or smaller) taper as the 650??

Wow, that IS an ugly windshield...nice condition Vetter, though! I remember that Vindicator windshield kit, brought out after Craig lost the company to some malicious bankers who thought they knew better how to market bike parts than bikers...

I like (and still have) the OEM style windshield, the one with the Marilyn Monroe curves to it...this is the one that keeps reappearing in the aftermarket. (I wonder why?  ::) )

Every time I take one of my 750 restos out for 'the ride' after completion, I'm reminded of why I bought a Vetter for my own.  :D

Well I FINALLY got my garage space back to fit both '79's inside finally.

Good thing it ahs snowed a few times already.









Quite the list of fixes this winter.
replace the fairing windscreen, re-cover the seat, replace EVERYTHING electrical from the harness up.
I am leery about ANYTHING electrical still beinbg good on this bike ever since the dyna2000 failure then the charging system frying the way it did.



Glad I am a packrat.... ::)
I think I have everything I need.
Just limited on spares after this...





I should be able to get a few photos of the inside of the stator cover.

It seriously looks like someone struck an arc with a welder all over inside there.
Mabey due to the voltage regulator??








Slowly but surely striping it over the past few nights.
Not too sure what else I am going to change this winter on this one.
