Well, LOTS of progress in little areas lately.

While removing flashing off the juggs, I spotted the '84 cb650 clutch perch I got some time ago, and thought about hooking it up so I can have a choke cable.

It surprisingly went quickly and well for that install.
Had to remove the ninja choke mount, and widen the slot in it to a little over 1/8", then I put one end of the cable in there, and crimped it so it cannot come out, and re-installed it.
Hooked up the cable on the other end, and had to use one of those adjuster nuts for the clutch cable to take up the excess slack, fit it fit OK.

Now I can start my bike with the push of a lever, switch of a key, and hitting the starter button.
Nice and easy!!

I also got my front brake pressure switch to work again.

Took it off, went to my local auto parts store to find a replacement.
The guy sprayed it out with brake cleaner, and tested it.... works fine now!

The missing tach looks funky with the fairing back on now!

Ok, so I must be missing something. What was the purpose of putting the 550 cam into the 650? I know putting a 650 cam into a 550 is a bit of a hop up, but the other way around??

Apparently it's "sharper", has steeper lobes, hence more "aggressive " performance.

SO I can do proper clearance checks on the piston sets I am modifying.
I need the cam for setup purposes for now.

I'm not crazy enough to keep a 550 in there.... OK, it's getting a 550 cam one day again, but it will have a higher than 650 profile.

No, the 550 cam has less lift unfortunately(it's a stock 550 cam).

This seems to be the bike I raid things for and from from time to time, this time it's the cam for my piston projects.

Last time I checked around you could still get a 550 cam that had 1mm more lift than the 650.

I know this was a while ago, but did you replace the 4-2? If you like the sound of the drilled exhaust, you'll LOVE the sound if you remove the rear baffles altogether. Just drill/grind away the rivets and pull the baffle out. It's not all that loud but has a nice deep grumble.

How do people drill their exhausts to good effect?! One side of my 4-4 was drilled and the bike sounded like #$%*. I mean, really, it just sounded like an oldschool hot air popcorn popper on 'roids back there. poppapoppapoppapoppa. I said "To hell with that noise" and JB welded the holes shut.

I can tell you the bike is noticeably quieter now with the 550 cam in it.
Hoping I can still keep pace up "the point of the mountain" on I-15 to and from work

And the drilled holes... I dunno about them yet.
Sounds OK in the garage, but on the road is another thing.
I picked this 4-2 up with the other '79(the one going stock) I bought, and I took off the 4-1 that was on my daily rider '79 to save it for my 763cc bike in the works.

The job of removing the casting flashing on the painted parts is nearly done now.
Gotta luv air tools!

I need to remove the carbs in a few days anyway to change jets, and bench synch the carbs.
So my gheto paint job will begin soon.
Should look good in the end.(at 30 ft, or 30mph at least)

just re-read your thread from the start, mostly outta general interest, and your mention at the beginning of a '85cb650 oil cooler caught my eye.

forgive me if i missed it but i couldn't find any more info about this and wonder if you could elaborate?

It's attached to my custom oil adapter.
A tight fit even by my standards.

I could have alleviated the problem by making the oil lines mount to the adapter further from the block...
But the lines needed the least bending where I put the holes, flats, and counter bores for the oil lines.

And Yeah it's a '85 cb650 nighthawk it came from(the DOHC model)
The adapter used by the DOHC for the oil cooler wasn't quite right for using on my SOHC 650(can't remember why though)

And pics will be coming this weekend.

Well, went for a ride...

Bot too bad, although it feels gas starved at high rpm's.
I'm thinking the jets I've switched to are too small for the carbs i'm running.
Definitely better drive-ability at low mph in a high gear though.
with the 650 cam about 25 was the lowest MPH 5th gear would ride, but would not accelerate for diddly at that RPM.(at 20 it would stumble)

At 15 in fifth now, I can accelerate and no chugging/hesitation, just nice even acceleration now.
It's fifth at low speed, what can I expect.
Took her on the highway, and she still does 65 nicely.
Thinking this might be OK for now.

Hmm you're making me wonder about using a 550 cam in my 650 project. Do you know how similar the "50hp" 650 cam is to the 550 stock cam?

Nothing massive.
But it's noticeable.
I think I will be happier once I either just break down and buy the right jets, or get one of my 750 jet sets to work out.

I found the pic of the 50hp camshaft; I think I'll stick with the stock cam for now. If I can convince myself to try swapping cams in the future I may do some testing. That is if I can ever convince myself to quit riding it once I get it put back together!

Hey, Soos,

I got an '81 CB650C and I was wondering what year bike your Ninja 600 carbs came from. I've been looking around a few places and I think I may have found a set that may work.

Aside from the carbs and the trimming of the throttle cable, what else did you need to make them work on your '79?

Yes in fact.

From the short jaunt on Manjisan's bike(with a set of 750 carbs) and then riding my cb650...
The 750 carbs give more of a quick crisp level of acceleration.
The CV ones I am running are smoother.
But they lag behind where the 750 carbs would put you at with the same throttle manipulation.

CV carbs IMO are great commuter/in town grocery getter carbs.
Great for a new rider.

I have (for piston modification setup reasons) swapped my stock 650 cam with a 550 one(with a slotted cam gear though), and my 4-1 exhaust for a 4-2 exhaust(for other reasons), and I think these carbs are suffering for it.
I can't wait until I can get my 650 cam back in this head!!

She idles like a kitten at about 8-900rpm though.
